Hello all,

I recently posted about engine idling rought, idling at full throttle, etc.. Got that fixed, seemed to be mainly the IACV, but probably some of the other things I fixed as well. Thanks for all who helped 🙏

I now am dealing with HEAVY sputtering.

I noticed this hose from my air filter area to the intake manifold (I think) under the battery looks like it is damaged, and needs replaced. I am not able to find the name or part number for this - Could someone let me know the name of this item and where to buy if possible? Would this be cause of sputtering? Is it important?

I also noticed I was missing a bolt here near oil pan. Anyone know what size / type by chance?

Last thing, I went to replace TPS Throttle Position Sensor, and could not get the old one to come apart from the clip... Any advice on getting that off?

Sorry if this is dumb questions, I spent the time to look for this info on the web but had little to no luck, so I very much appreciate any help...

For my sputtering - Replaced fuel filter, checked fuel pump looked fine, replacing O2 sensor soon as it looked rough and I had hole in muffler that I patched. I need to check fuel pressure still, anything else?

I have also seen a lot of stuff about "Timing" and correct position of the throttle screw. These things I am new to, does anyone have an easy method they could maybe walk me through?

What's the worst that could happen?
well...image 2 and 3 are your cold air intake. 6 and seven are your TPS, but you already know that.
Not sure what you are looking for in image 1, unless that is also for the cold air intake.

Not sure what 4 and 5 are for, but if it ain't leakin' the missing bolt shouldn't be an issue. It's probably a 10mm head though.

Yes, I was just looking for the name, so thanks for your help there! Cold Air Intake

It is not leaking from that spot no, but I might try to bolt it just in case. 10mm

Thank you very much!

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Actually, referring to the hose in the first 3 pics. Is that going from the filter box to a sheet metal shroud around your exhaust manifold on that side? If so, that is only used in cold weather to bring warm air from around the exhaust into the intake to help the engine warm up faster. I don’t remember what it’s called. But it’s not a cold air intake. It is vacuum controlled through a damper at one end of the tube.

Hello and thanks for the reply,

I believe you are correct in saying it is not Cold Air Intake. I searched after getting that reply and kinda came to that conclusion as well, so I am very thankful you took time to look and comment.
It is hard to see where exactly it is connecting to, but all things considered I believe you are correct as it goes from under the air filter box towards the exhaust manifold, kind of below everything else.

Thank you again for your reply, I greatly appreciate it... Just got the MAP replaced, now I am going to put the new 02 sensor in and take it for a spin. Wish me luck!

I should have added that if it is what I said, it will have no affect on how the engine runs. It’s just air going to the air filter box when a little damper opens. Only needed in extreme cold temperatures.

Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.

"Sputter" makes me think ignition as a possible suspect.

At any point recently, have you replaced the plugs or plug wires? Especially the plug wires; as you're going in and touching a lot in the engine bay, and it doesn't take much to disturb an old plug wire to cause it to be failing.

P.S.- your questions are fine. That's how we learn.

Thanks E!
I have a similar set-up in my Ranger. I always referred to it as a Cold Air Intake.
It does have a little round thingy. That's probably the damper you describe. Did not know that. (y)
