Hello!

Does anyone have any idea where to find the VIN (vehicle identification number) on a 1992 Ranger? That is, other than on the dashboard and by the driver-side door.

Thanks!

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Those are the best places I know of.

supposedly its on the frame somewhere, Ive had several rangers and have yet to find it, completely tore down a ‘97 & made a trailer out of the rear frame section.

If you check the radiator core support there should be a "body buck tag". It's a stamped tin plate screwed to the core support, it will have a partial.

I've torn my 87 down to literal bits and pieces, and I have not found another VIN tag.

You can try these places: https://www.fordification.com/tech/vin_find.htm

Could be on passenger side frame or drivers side but near same locations
I think that is more for older stuff. The actual legal vin was on the frame, the tag on the door was mainly so it was easier to read.

Like how all you need to build an old Bronco or Jeep is the frame, there isn't much to legally tie the body to the frame.

Another place to look on older vehicles is on the firewall. I don't think this applies to the Ford Ranger but if the other two prime options aren't available, that would be another place to check.

I have seen them stamped in to the firewall using small dots to form the letters and numbers in some cases a tag but this was a manufacture specific thing.

A properly suspensioned Ranger can be safely airborne for up to 4 seconds at a time! =:O
Not that you're a mad bomber, but... IIRC there's some version of the VIN stamped into the left rear/main axle... not the axle housing/tube, but the spinning axle itself... and even powerful eh-splosives won't erase it.

Update (better late than never!):

The mechanic that did the engine swap for me said he found the VIN number somewhere on the firewall, even though I never found it there myself. I also took my Ranger to the Theft Department at the DMV and they said they were able to get a "partial" VIN off the frame somewhere...even though I never found it there myself. I guess the lesson here is don't trust me to find anything for you—ha!

For full transparency, the reason I wanted to find the VIN number somewhere else on the vehicle was because when I bought it I hadn't noticed the number had been removed in the obvious places. However, there was a VIN on the title that was signed over to me, so I wanted to verify that the VIN on the title was indeed the VIN for the vehicle I just purchased.

After verifying the "partial" VIN at the DMV, the folks there set me up with new "public" VIN stickers, now safely (and legally) adhered to the doorjamb and in a more obvious place on the firewall. All set! (y)
