Something else, if both front tires are off ground and I rotate one, will the other move?

They should. The transaxle has a mini diff in it. But there is enough parasitic drag in there that it can hold the other wheel still. If you want to try that you are best to turn the passenger side wheel by hand, it has the most weight attached.

Ok I can turn both sides by hand...even in park. Pulled both axles and cranked engine. Put in reverse, both sides turning. Put in park, I can turn both sides by hand

Both sides will turn in opposite directions by hand, even in Park. It will prevent them from turning in unison though. The park pawl is up from the final drive, which like I said, is basically a mini diff, so the spider gears and everything can still turn in opposite directions when in park, just like you can spin the rear axle of a RWD vehicle with the trans in park.

What you broke is the bank. A Windstar is never a good financial move.

I don't know that for sure. If it goes backwards but not forward something is wrong, but it isn't the pump, and it isn't super likely to be the torque converter. I've never been a big fan of the AX transmissions, but I am also not a transmission guy, most of my objection is to how hard they are to take out.

Then how do you know it was going in reverse?

Where the axles go in was turning. I had no way to see if I could stop them from rotating

What other 3.8 will work in this van?

The Taurus/Sable used them well into the 90s.

That's the only other transverse application I know of.
