Good place to look for used parts in you area, zipcode

1989 BII should have a Mitsubishi FM146 4x4 trans even if its a 2WD

I would switch to an M5OD-R1(M5R1), from a 1990-2000 Ranger/B-series 4.0l 4x4
Bolts to 2.9l and transfer case
Can then use 4.0l flywheel, clutch and starter, its an upgrade, lol

I stayed with the FM146, as I don't run it hard (but more-so...'cause I didn't know any better at the time ). I did do the 5th gear update.
Had some difficulty sourcing an Inner Shift Lever Boot;
Howe Racing 223991 Howe Precision Ball Joint Boots | Summit Racing
Also had to fab a Shift Lever Lower Bushing from a Nissan oem unit;
Shifter lever bushing cup for Nissan RWD cars & trucks w/ early FS5R30 - 20mm OD | eBay
Both efforts took substantial measuring of/searching for parts.
Sourcing parts IS an issue for the Mitsubishi units.
A call to Ford yielded a LOL.
Mitsubishi said "You want what?! "
Sooo, the pictures tell the story.
I used decreasing git sandpaper to mill the outside diameter with it in the drill press.
Used the Dremel carbide bit to "sculpt" the inside "cup".
