The guys I know running the 44s are outright merciless. One actually swapped to a D60 and says he wishes he hadn't wasted the extra money.

That said, a D60 would only add about 3" to my width and when I'm already adding 6.5", what's three more going to hurt? I don't mind spending some extra cash up front to make sure it's gonna hold, but the locals snatch up D60s as soon as they show up in the yards. However, I found a guy who flopped a 2002 F250 with a 60 up front. He's planning to scrap it so I'm going to see if I can talk him out of the axles.

Bottom line, I'd love a 60, but they're almost impossible to find at a reasonable price down here.

FYI , Super Duty F250's did not have D60, it's a D50 unless it was swapped out already. The D60 is in DRW F350 and all F450 and F550.

f450 and 550's is actually a super 60, the ring and pinion is larger, along with the U joints. They are also about 7 inches wider than a d60.

FYI, in 2002 they started using the D60 in the SD. At least, that's what the Internet says... so it must be true, right? Infallibility of the Internet and all that.

Yes, only '99-'01 SDs had the D50 (although a few out there claim to have seen them as "leftover stock" in some '02s. Not sure how much truth is in that, so take it with a grain of salt lol).

You can tell by measuring the pinion nut:
D60 = 1-5/16"
D50 = 1-1/8" (<IIRC)

sub 300 hp in general??? dont think i could trade a d35 for a 44 if i had parts available.


d35 is great to about 230-250 hp and 35's with some sanity with the go pedel.

I'm already on 34s and I have no sanity with the go pedal. I have a tendency to push my junk to the limit. After all, if it breaks I can drive my F150 until I fix it.
I'm very strongly looking for a D60 (thanks for pushing the issue;, UrbanRedneckKid- just needed a shove in the right direction) so I can beat the tar out of it and not have to worry about breaking anything.
The original D44 swap would have been for 37s, but if I'm going through all that frikkin' work I don't want to have to worry about breaking things... and we all know how being happy with 37s would turn into wishing I'd gone to 40s (for example- I really think I'll go for 38.50s.)

So thanks for the advice you guys provided. It'll be some time before I actually manage to move forward, but it'll happen in due time. I hope to have my hands on the front 60 within two weeks and if it doesn't have a matching rear I shouldn't have much issue finding one. After all, it doesn't have to be 4x4 to have a rear axle!

well your going the right way then bud.....cause for most if the 35 cant cut it you need a 60.

and the 60 costs more when it breaks too....keep that in mind..

trust me...

they still break......just not nearly as often.
