Would you spend $50k and put it on the trails?
My loaded four door Sport (see sig/avatar) was a hair under $30k after a few corporate phone calls. I now have $8k in upgrades on it after bumpers, winch, wheels/tires, lift, fenders, skids, and sliders... and I'm not afraid to use it. But I do still get nervous once in a while.

I was considering a Raptor but went with a new 5.0 GT instead. Biggest pile of garbage I ever owned.

The Jeep fits me, my wife, my son, our three large dogs, and all the equipment/groceries to spend a weekend at our camp. I love the versatility and the platform impressed the tar out of me every time I take it wheeling. For no lockers it does one Hell of a job getting through a lot of stuff.

Nor would I spend $30k...

For the kind of wheeling I do, a truck is required... unless you want to snuggle up with a dead deer or greasy/oily parts.

My brother has an '11 GT, I love the thing. If I had the $$ to buy one and a place to keep it I would have one of my own in a heartbeat.

My $1500 included the wheels/tires.

But you tore my ass with buy-in price!

My Explorer was $1200 all in, on 34x12.50 LTBs and M5OD conversion. I welded the D35 spiders and beat the snot out of it.
Sold it to a buddy who rolled it off the highway six weeks later.

The local non-Jeepers have built their rigs to Hell and back. If it's a Bronco/Blazer it's more than likely on one tons. They want to make sure the Jeep guys don't get to pick on them for not making it up something... and if they do have trouble, they will give it eight kinds of Hell trying to get through.

I love my JK. Never was a Jeep guy until they redesigned the new girly-man interior. Traded the POS 5.0 for a two door Jeep. Then realized that being married with custody of my son and three large dogs... a two door was a dumb fking idea. Then came the 285hp 3.6... so I traded.

I've read about it. No issues yet, but I will be extending the warranty in the event they aren't forced to recall it.

Every brand technician makes money on that brand's failures. I have a cousin clearing well into six figures doing almost strictly Ford trucks.

As for buying American, Chrysler is owned by Italians and lots of Ford parts are designed and manufactured out of country. Toyota trucks are more American than most American trucks.

Chrysler has been borderline foreign for quite awhile, they were owned by the Germans for several years too. My old Plymouth Laser was in fact a rebadged Mitsubishi, they did a TON of that in the '90's.

My Ranger is fairly American now, got rid of the German V6 and French transmission.

Warranty will definatly be worth it. Idk why chrysler put all their eggs in one basket with that motor before testing it in just one car.... its in almost everything they make now. My dealership I work for has a diesel shop too, we do about 10 6.0L fords a week. We buy them cheap, fix em and then sell for 10x the amount we paid.

AND REGUARDLESS OF WHAT THEIR COMMERCIALS SAY toyotas are not more american than any american car company. Yes, american companies are have assembly plants and parts made in mexico/china, but they're not more american at all. Look at a toyota vin, if the first letter in anything but a "1" its not made here.... toyota has some cars/trucks built here, but not near the amount ford/chevy or dodge have.

Don't forget about our precious Ford parts and some motor/ trans that are made in Germany and China, Bro. I have family that works for Nissan and Toyota. They make and assemble a lot of vehicles here in America. I have a brother-in-law that has worked at three different assembly lines for Ford (he also built the Rangers for 12 years). He has been there over 30 years and he is up in Ohio. He has never owned a Ford. He drives a lifted 4x4 2006 V8 Dakota with 35's. This is his third Dakota and he loves them and drives them cross country 3 times a year to wheel in Utah and California. His wife had a Ford Taurus she bought new and two years later it caught on fire in the driveway and burned to the ground after they came back from a movie. She now has a 2003 4x4 Sport Trac that has had 2 motors and 1 trans replaced since she bought it new. The motors were replaced under warranty but not the trans. Her next vehicle will be....a Tacoma 4x4 she said. She is buying one for her birthday this June!!!

good luck man! they are nice engines when they dont fail. i give props to chrysler for at least having a modern engine design for once.

sounds like two bad vehicles they got. i dont think taurus fires were very common. up north youd never see old ones on the road because theyd rust away.... down here in nc you still see them on the road quite a bit. dakotas were alright trucks... before they started redesigning them in 2003 or whenever it was. then they got ugly! i had a 2003 regular explorer, for three years (now my ex's) and it was very dependable and very nice inside and out. we also had a 1996 explorer with a 5.0L. never had a major problem with that either. also had a 1992 explorer with no problems. and a 93 escort, that i had to do a headgasket on, but was like that when i got it. a bunch more too. but i will say, when i was growing up, we had a fleet of ford aerostars, and each one the transmission went bad.... but, they were all over 120k miles and never had a transmission service (not sticking up for the a4ld though). ive had chevys toyotas pontiacs mazdas hondas gmcs jeeps caravans, etc. and id way rather drive a ford than any of them.

My problem is not with jeeps but jeep owners .... most jeep owners remind me of hybrid owners.
