Thanks for the heads up. I really like that BTF set up but I'm running coils so it won't work. Glad to see some one has already done this and found out it works, instead of messing up my knuckles and being stuck with buying new ones. Yea the tie rod ends won't create that dead spot, plus I don't like hymes, possible link of failure.

Heading out to finish up the 8.8, setting pinion pre-load and sealing it up. Dana 30 next week.
The last link I posted uses T.R.E's. Should be perfect for you. It's $500, but comes with all the steering.

i dont know if anyone mentioned it, but you may wanna think about moving the coil perch to the center of the axle. it'll reduce some headaches down the road.

You should do this, especially if you move the axle forward any.

As far as heims, I used 7/8 heims...don't think they will break anytime soon.

With those coil perches off center... It makes taking the control arms off a PAIN IF YOU'RE NOT carefully

Well I'm not going to go and hack up the axle just yet, I'll wait until in at that fork in the road of putting the axle under my truck and see where it lands. My buddy put a 44 under his and didn't move much really, coil buckets and that's about it. I figure I have the opinion of moving my coil buckets on the frame rail up, down, in, and out as I need considering I have to cut and re-box in the frame anyways.

All good ideas and information though guys, thanks for it. Got my steering box today. Got one from PCS, #SG900R. It is a lot heavier than I expected it to be. Going to make a plate to bolt it up through my fame tonight.

As for the steering I should be alright with just reaming out the holes and bolting it all up. Planned on running 16" wheels anyways so I'll have the extra clearance anyways.

I would strongly advise gusseting the upper and lower ball joint C things to the axle tube. My cousin and I bent his into negative camber. Those axles are not to beefy...

C gussets

I have improved on my Dana 30 from stock by far. Added custom 1/8" plate "C" gussets and 1/4" truss. Should have no issues with bending this axle!:D

That's what I meant! I would have gone out further and also brought the gusset to the axle tubes...

Good work tho. If you don't beat it too hard you should be fine ;)

oh, Sry

Sorry for the mix up:sad:, didn't know if you had read through my hole thread or not. Nah, don't plan on beating her too bad. Its my DD/trail runner so if I do break stuff it shouldn't be to time consuming to fix.

Plan on starting the swap in two weeks!:headbang:

Only have a few more things I need to order but all the important things are here. Last component I have to wait for will be coils, have to see how much lift I will need.

I was wondering too, does anyone know the measurements of stock ford 8.8 31 spline u-bolts are. Want to get some made at a local shop but I don't have one to give to him to go off of. Any ideas on what the dimensions are?

the inner diameter of them will need to be 3.25", but i dont know what the length of the stockers is. i bought 4 new currie u-bolts from 4wheel parts when i put my explorer 8.8 in. they were 10 inches long i think

E-locker issues...potentionally!

I just posted up in the axles section but for those who are fallowing here is my issue:!

I am installing a Eaton e-locker in my HP Dana 30 soon and I have some issues I need some information on. From what I have read I need different bearings from the ones that come in the install kit with my gears. I need LM102949 bearings and LM102911 races for the carrier. For what I have seen and read through some extensive research that the shims need to be installed between the bearings and the carrier, but the stock Dana 30 shims don't fit! I don't know if this is true or not but this is what I need to know. I plan on calling Eaton tomorrow but I wanted to see if anyone knew if that is the case. I searched Jeep forums and found that Dana 44, GM 8.8,7.5 and Ford 7.5 shims will fit, can anyone second this.?:icon_confused:

Just want to find out so if I have to order anything I can do so now instead of waiting and not b able to instal my new gears when they come in.

If they go between the housing and outer bearing race than how could they not fit? The carrier bearing ID may be different where it presses onto the new locker / carrier but the OD should be the same or else it would not fit tight in the housing...

Edit: I read it wrong, if the shims go between the carrier and bearing than they may be different. That sounds like its guna be a major PITA to adjust your backlash....

Got some answers

So I called Eaton today and got everything all situated. The instructions in the box tell you what bearings you need as well as races. From my research some said that those number were wrong, but in fact other were wrong! People at Eaton said that those are right bearings and races. Also the nice new install kit I bought is kinda useless, the pinion bearings and seals I can still use but the other bearings and shims not. The Dana 30 shims will not fit on the new locker hub, so instead I can use GM 8.5, and 7.5, Ford 7.5, and Dana 44 shims. Luckily a friend of mine re geared a ford 7.5 and a Dana 44 so I'm in luck!:yahoo:

So for all you wanting to run a e-locker do your research for your application beforehand! It's not a huge issue but just a PITA. Wish me luck should be starting that tomorrow, will be taking pics for the thread.
