I took my valve cover off awhile ago because I had valve tapping and I readjusted my pushrods, but I now realize my pushrods where mushroomed at the top and bottom and that isn't normal. I still have a really bad tapping noise that kind of comes and goes while driving I assumed a lifter after this failed to fix it but I've never heard of a lifter coming and going so I thought a camshaft lobe was bad. Now I'm back to the rocker arms since I realized the pushrods where mushroomed, I just need some confirmation that this is probably it before I tear into it again.

Care to give us any clue at all about which engine you are working on?

My apologies, it's the 4.0 OHV, only vehicle I've got.

The rods getting "footballed" (because they wear a football shape into the end) is pretty common on that engine. It does cause a ticking, sewing machine type noise. The fix is usually to replace the rods. In a pinch they can just be flipped over and run for a while longer, with the only parts needing replaced being the valve cover gaskets.

Thank you so much! it looks like someone may have done that already because they are footballed on both the lifter and rocker sides and it looks like they've opened it up before. I'll see if that takes care of it, once again thank you!

Yeah, that's the cheapest place to start anyway. I think I came up with a cost of around $400 in parts to replace the lifters.

Yah, I thought I would have to do a full rebuild so I figured I should ask since both ends where mushroomed and I wasn't sure if they came that way or not(can you tell I'm kind of new to this stuff?). I thought I'd have to do a rebuild, I still might because there are a lot of other things wrong with this engine. Thank you for the help I really appreciate it.

the stock lifters do have a "mushroom" look to them, or at least the one of those engines I've been into did... they're made out of solid steel instead of the straight hollow ones used on a lot of engines.
