Mpg mods?

Whatre you all doing to get a few more mpgs? I know driving habit has a lot to do with it.
I have 97 std cab shrt bed 2.3l 5 speed

So far ive replaced:
plugs, wires, IAC valve, home made cat back, intake muffler delete, new o2 sensors, new egr sensor.
Ive upped my mileage from 19-20 mixed driving to 23-24

Ive thought about doing:
Electric fan conversion
Under drive pulleys? (do they even make them?)
msd 6al box

Can anyone think of anything else? or should i just do a diesel swap? haha

For my 97 with the 4.0, I have a mod that allows me to use less gas than both of my cars combined! I leave it in the driveway.

Seriously tho, if you want better mileage, keep it tuned up, replace the air filter along with all of the other stuff that you have replaced.

electric fan conversion will not net you anything, underdrive pulley will probably not get you much either, and it is changing how Ford designed your truck to run, so you might get problems to boot. Think about it, if Ford could up their CAFE standards by spending less money on a smaller pulley(for the crankshaft) or just a teensy bit more for larger accessory pulleys, they would have done it...

Have no idea what an msd 6al box is...

But if you want to up your mileage, go easy on the skinny pedal. anticipate your stops, drive smoothly. remove any excess weight from the vehicle that you will not need (girlfriend, mother in law, the hundred pounds of trash from the bed etc) And if you remove the girlfriend/ mother in law, not only will you get better gas mileage, the truck will be nice and quiet too!

Hah thats why I bought a 4 banger ranger and leave the twin turbo monster parked on weekdays

Msd 6al box makes the spark plugs spark multiple times instead of just once (Hence MSD; Multiple Spark Discharge)
Some 302 f150 owners have claimed an extra 2-3 mpgs with one installed

I also have a 99-04 lightning maf sensor laying around, can i make an adapter to wire this in for a bigger intake or would this require an ecu flash?

What is this twin turbo monster you speak of?

And a lot of it has to do with how you drive, be lighter on the gas and you will get better mileage.

One big thing is keeping your tires inflated correctly. Under inflated tires create more friction and decrease MPG. Plus it's unsafe.

the body is a little rough, but its a bit of sleeper that way
Its sad that the rangers body is completely rust free but the lightning is so bad

No idea ive never dynoed it, and ive taken it to the track twice. When I had a stock long block my best time was a 13.17 @ 101mph on 12lbs of boost.
(it was 90* out both times i went)

But over the winter I rebuilt the motor did H/C/I and a bunch of other things.
Im shooting for mid 11s this summer
Its so tempting to just drop the motor and trans in the ranger lol

E fan will help,Lucas oil additive,high flow air filter, and Lucas carb fuel inj cleaner....on a 4 cyl it won't make a huge difference but things add up. I checked my mpg a couple weeks ago on my 2.9 and I'm getting 22+ MPG avg with 172,000 mi on it. All I've done is high flow air filter (cone),Lucas in the oil and fuel and a glass pack muffler...besides keeping it tuned up. My truck is listed as getting 23 mpg highway new.

Some people are experimenting with HHO, but there is no plug n play kit out there for it so you'll have to do some trial and error.

I have the same truck. 97 ranger regular cab short bed with 2.3L, 5 speed. I just put 235/75/ 15 tires on about 2 months ago and have been getting 24 MPG average. I just had my timing belt and water pump replaced and put new spark plug wires on. It will be interesting to see if I get a little more or if it stays the same.

Oh and by the way I have a tannoeu cover and cary about 500lbs of stuff in my bed at all times.

I like gas mileage, but 43 MPG isn't worth driving a car that looks like it is from Back to the Future Part 2...

His mods have successfully made the pickup truck as useful as a screen door on a submarine

1995 Honda Civic. 55 MPG gasser. No power steering, no automatic trans, no 4x4, no balls, but darn tootin if the worst tank of gas my buddy ever got out of that car wasn't still 50 MPG.

Then a tree fell on it, but that's another story.
