My credo
If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
No,I'm not going to lecture again about calling Supercabs "extended cabs" or traction lok's "posi's" though it's still happening.
Saying it doesn't run, shift, stop, or work properly won't help anyone diagnose a problem. There are people here who will try to help you given a chance and enough info.
I used to insist my service advisors ask the customers questions that would give the techs useful information:
"Hesitating" means that there is a delay between throttle movement and rpm increase
"skipping or missing" mean that the engine shudders or shakes and is usually more noticeable when the engine is under load
"surging" is when the rpms vary and is often noticed at idle and when trying to maintain a steady low speed
What driving conditions make the problem worse or more severe? High speeds? Low speeds? Uphill? on turns? On bumps? Engine warm or cold? Outside temp? Accelerating?
Are there driving conditions that make the problem less noticeable?
How long has the problem existed and did it happen all at once or gradually worsen?

WALT. YOU'RE TRYING TO ASSIGN SCIENCEY SOUNDING STUFF TO VEHICLES.

STOP THAT. WE ALL KNOW THAT THEY'RE RUN BY SORCERERS THAT LIVE IN THE BOX IN THE FRONT OF THE CAR.

STOP TRYING TO ANGER THEM. IF THEY BECOME ANGRY, THEY KILL YOUR HOOPDY.

This is a never ending battle I remember from my early days as a tech.

I believe it has gotten better with time... but the average consumer doesn't know a thing about J-1930 or any of the SAE terminology.

You keep fighting the good fight Walt... I'm with you in spirit.

And while we are at it "It doesn't turn over" means you hit the key and the engine doesn't move, it doesn't mean that the starter spins the engine but the engine doesn't start.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
And not every electrical problem is a “short”!!! In fact, very few electrical problems are actually shorts. Most are “opens”, usually due to loose or broken connections.

What do you call it? A "grinder"?

Well if you are asking about the term I use for long rounded-end sandwhiches I call them "subs".

However my comment was driven by the fact that we are talking about cars in this thread and a hoagie is a type of sandwich.

Grinder is just Tinder for gays.

It is a science.
I was the guy the customers would chew out if the repair wasn't successful.
One woman brought her car in about 6 times complaining about a horrible noise "every time I turn left". She was always late for work and couldn't/wouldn't go for a test drive with me. She was getting pretty snarly. One afternoon she was off work and came to get me, we drove around for about 15 minutes with no noise. She said it always did it coming out of her road onto the main road. She lived nearby so I drove there and reentered Rt4 after stopping at the end of her street. No noise. She got mad and insisted I let her drive. It's hard for me to get a feel for a problem if I'm not driving but I agreed to let her.
She pulled up to the stop sign at the end of her street on the left side of the road, blasted out into the road at WOT way too close to an oncoming car, the left front wheel dropped into a storm drain just as she shifted-still at WOT- to second gear, and it made a metallic grunt noise. She turned to me with a smile and said "see?". Between the WOT launch and 1-2 shift through the storm drain at full left turn, she was twisting the chassis enough to ground out an engine mount. That's "every time I turn left". If you've never driven in NH, we have so few straight sections of road that we name them, we turn a lot.

I'm sure I missed others but that's another good one.

In New England a grinder and a sub are the same thing.

It doesn't crank up.

That is a term I've heard many times...

the symptom is actually... engine cranks but won't start.
