Just picked up an 88 ranger ext.cab 4x4 with the AL4D 2.9.
non runner. Body is perfect tires are new I figured what the heck $300 later its in my shop. Fuel relay later and volaa runs actually pretty smooth. I tried to back it out of the shop and @%$#&@. All forward gears lock up good and reverse tries. Figuring it was going to be a teardown I drove it to the carwash about 4 miles away because of the valve cover problems. On the way the torque converter would unlock (I think) and kick back in. Question??? Could this just be a silenoid issue or converter problem? Or should I just bite it and grab some wrenches. I'm just a 50 yr. old college kid that needs an Alaskan commuter truck.

Welcome to TRS.

Could be the solenoids. but new truck, new problems, I would rebuild the trans and just start fresh.

Did you check the fluid level those are all symptoms of a tranny low on oil it may just have a leak. Also check the vacuum line to the modulator on the side of the tranny next to the CAT. If the vacuum line is hard or cracked replace it.

I have an 87 which did the same thing:

Drove it a year with no reverse.....no warning, all forward gears went out today. Thinking about it, the torque converter did kick in and out right around 3000 rpms, in 3rd gear. Just now thougt about that being the issue, I was looking else where for for the cause of that symptom. Now it is beginning to make sense.
