No. The output shaft of the 2wd transmission is different from the 4x4. You must use a 4x4 transmission in order to use a transfer case. And please don't curse.

M5OD-R1 is a model number not what it fits, just FYI

These models are engine specific since the bell housing doesn't come off

So if you have a 2.9l engine and a 4x4 then you could only use an M5OD-R1 from a 4.0l engine 4x4 Ranger or Mazda B4000

Because you have a 4x4 the speedometer cable is on the transfer case, this means you can use a 1990-2011 M5OD-R1(HD) from a 4.0l 4x4 Ranger or Mazda B4000 4x4

2.9l and 4.0l(OHV or SOHC) used the same block so trans bolts match up

Fixed one part. 2.9 ranger came with m5od starting 1988 or 1986. Depends on assembly plant and year.

Either way, 2 9 m50d has different gears than 4.0 m5od. I like them, but never drove a 2.9 with 4.0 trans.

The m5od is a big upgrade from the fm146. I swapped mine and was much happier.

the fm146 reverse gear is better, though.

you will need the m5od starter plate. Fm146 one does not fit. 1354 transfer case on the m5 is better as well. You will also need m5 floor plate and shifter boots. Get the front driveshaft as well. D35 shaft does fit d28.

If you look for one, look for a trans without a bolt on cover. Just two drain plugs. TK and fm both have bolt on covers.

I thought just the 2WD 2.9ls had the M5OD-R1 from 1988-1992?

Donor for mine was a factory m5od in a 1990 4x4 XL short cab long bed, manual everything.
