I remember when you had to pay to have a license for a CB. My father had a call sign. Then the FCC dropped the license requirement. Maybe they'll eventually do that with GMRS. 🤷‍♂️

I got my MXT115AGVP3 yesterday and started looking into a GMRS license. It looks like the fee is supposed to drop from $70 down to $35 (good for 10 years) sometime this year.
Probably November...

Question on this, does this mean that your spotter has to be a family member or have their own FCC license?

I'm just curious how strict that wording is to be applied in the regs. If I have a license and I loan a mobile unit to my buddy while we hunt, ride, etc, does that violate any laws as long as I get my unit back?

I don't think anyone would bother you as long as you aren't doing anything stupid, but I am curious.

I could see one coming in handy out in the mountains and areas where there is zero cell service.
Handhelds aren’t capable of breaking the rules. So, shouldn’t be a concern. Even the mobile radios with more power output capability automatically adjust power output to the channel you are on in order not to break the rules. As a result, certain channels are recommended over others because of the power limitations. Like the shared FRS channels. Unless you need to talk to someone on those channels, avoid them.

Some like using channel 16 for off road (4X4=16) as a result.

Correction to my post. Mobile units can break the rules when it comes to allowable wattage with a license vs bot having a license. They just won’t go above the allowable wattage a license holder will be able to do.

You can still break the power output rules if you don’t have a license.

Handhelds are limited to non-license levels because more people will buy them due to convenience and affordability and battery life. More power output means battery life will suffer.
