So I took my truck a 1997 B4000 to the mechanic because I thought the rear end was bad. They told me they were 100% certain that was it. I bought a used one and after a day spent having a buddy swapping it out it turns out its just a carrier bearing. ugghhhh.... So onto my issue....

I had some gauge cluster lights out so I decided to change them to led. I pulled the cluster out and changed bulbs and that is where the drama started. I changed them all and now all the bulbs work however the gauges no longer work. No spedo, no tach, no fuel gauge. Fuses are good. Wiring looks ok. Any ideas?

Double check that everything is plugged in all the way. Check fuses

Welcome to TRS :)

1997 Ranger cluster wiring below

There is ONE fuse that powers all the gauges, and ONE ground

If you look at connector C214 - pin 13, thats the 12volts from fuse 11
And C215- pin 8, C216- pin 1, but all from same fuse

C215 - pin 2 is the Ground for all the gauges

If either is unplugged then no gauges, or if fuse is blown

All of the fuses are good and there are no issues with the wiring. I am stumped. Even tried a spare set of gauges too. This has me miffed?!? I have reseated all of the connectors and even checked the diodes and etc. on the back of the cluster and nothing is bad or damaged.

Pull the cluster and use a volt meter to test the 12v wires and the GROUND on the 3 connectors

Are you actually testing the fuses or are you just looking at them

Tested them with my fluke multimeter they’re perfectly fine. Went and bought new ones just in case and still didn’t solve the issue. All the voltage coming out of the wiring is where it should be.

Then cluster is bad

That's all it can be, its not complicated

If you apply 12v and ground to a light bulb and it doesn't light up then "light bulb" is bad, no mystery, lol

Your "light bulb" is bad

All of the lights that illuminate the cluster were working perfectly well. I already tried to change the gauge cluster with another cluster and got the same result. Turns out one of the pins wasn’t connected to the original wire inside the harness that good. Problem is solved and the truck is all better now for the moment. Now I still have to change out a carrier bearing and give it an alignment.
