Hey all, I couldn't find the answer in a few a searches, so working on my '89 BII. I need to drop the tranny to replace the master and slave cyl. Should I unbolt the transmission from the transfer case, or remove them as one assembly? It would appear that I can disconnect them while not removing the crossmember in the process as well.

Any tips?

I dont know much about the B2 but on my ‘93 ranger I dropped the t.c. then the trans, both are awkward enough seperatly, I can’t imagine trying to do both at once. (At least with my setup, having a lift and specialty jacks might be a different story)

Mandates are for fascist dictators!
Had a bad experience removing them as a unit. Was my first time and with a poorly built cradle mounted to my floor jack it would have been faster just to separate them first. There are only like 5 or 6 fairly accessible bolts connecting them from what I remember.

Do it separately. Much easier to remove the trans crossmember though and let the whole assembly droop down. Two of the bolts holding the t-case on are kinda hard to get to with the crossmember there.

I did it both ways. If you don't have a transmission jack, unbolt the tcase first.

I don't have a tranny jack. I was thinking about picking up one of the cheap harbor freight ones though. If not, I'll attempt to ratchet strap it to my good jack.

Definitely much easier separating the 2. Smarter not harder is what my dad always said!

Update:
I ended up keeping them connected. It certainly was a bit unwieldly, but with a cheap tranny jack and a floor jack it wasn't terrible.
Managed to move the transmission back just enough to pop the old slave out and reinstall.
