making adapter from old distributor

I've got my rebuilt engine almost ready to push lube thru the pump. Need to know if I should just go buy a used distributor and tear it down or what else can I use to pressurize the oil thru the system before installation??? It's a 2.9 and has got a odd end on the shaft. the old engines you could just use a allen wrench end type shaft.

That's what I'd do. Grind the teeth off the gear and use the whole dist. I don't know about this motor but small block chevys will only oil one side of the motor if you just spin the pump without the internal oil galleries being sealed by the dist.

If you have lubed the internals well enough you can turn the engine over by hand while its still on the stand.
I use an 18" breaker and spin it around from the crank bolt. If you have a strong air ratchet that works as well.
Leave the dist out, plugs out and valve covers off so you can see when oil gets to the top. Prefill the filter so you dont have to pump oil into it.
Bring it back to TDC and finish the install.

If the cylinder walls concern you, squirt in a little oil, they shouldn't be dry for a first start up anyway.

I have used this twice before and haven't had a lubrication related failure.

I usually just do an oil change and let oil run down both sides of the heads and turn it a few times with no spark. Then fire it up.... If you rebuilt it then you used assembly lube on the bearings. Also you are going to have a ton of shavings and garbage flying around that baby for the first 500 anyways so that's all you need.

walked into the junk yard --they told me to look in the old school bus--found a distributor with 1988 2.9 written on the side---pure luck --found a broken drill bit --drove the pin out for the gear and now I've got me a tool to pressure the oil system.
