I have recently taken on the project of turning a Short wheel base Chevy Fleetside, into a SWB Chevy Dually. I have a complete chevy truck and a cab and frame for the SWB Dually. I also have the fiberglass "humps" to be added to the SWB Chevy bed. Sometime in this, the rear axle will be converted to discs.
Has anybody here done such a project before, or have any tips they would like to share.
Pics will come soon.

Sounds like a fun project, its one thats been on my bucket list for years. Instead of duallys I'd be running big ass drag tires though.

This is the dually chassis and cab. The humps are sitting right behind the cab.

This is the truck that is donating it's bed to the project

The donor truck is a twin tanker. I think we are going to try to keep both tanks for the dually too. We'll seewhen we get that far.

Shouldnt be an issue since chevy ran 1 tank on each side (why ill never know. Made filling both a pain), IIRC shortboxes had them factory, just be a matter of finding a good filler door location.

When I was in High school, a kid in my neighborhood was gifted a very sweet lowered full-size Chevy truck. There was a switch on the dash for changing over to the other tank. That was nice, filling it up took a while and consisted of me standing by the pump while he turned his truck oround so we could get to the other filler hose.

A few interior shots of the Donor. The seat has faded to a nice Purple tone.

custom "EdelBrock" console.
50014

Funny thing: There is and Edelbrock carb on the motor, and Edelbrock carb on this intake, and there was another carcass of an Edelbrock in the bed.

The guy who sold my buddy the humps, just cut them off of the old truck. So i used those pieces as a template for this truck. DS was eazy, I just used the gas door as placement, then lined up the body lines of the two.
50015

PS was a little more involved. I had to fine center on the template and line it up with center of tire. Then make sure it was the same as the other side, height wize. Turns out that the wheel is not centered in the wheel well.
50016

Used this little number to make my marks
50017

All Holes have been marked
50018

Cut line marked as well.
50019

Next up: Sawzall and cutting wheels will be throwing sparks and hot metal around.

To my knowledge theres no way to tell a 305 from a 350, making a large assumption thats the engine the truck left the lot with its one of those two choices. I dont belive the 327 was used after 72.

I suppose it *could* be a 400 smallblock as well.

Keep your mind like an umbrella, it only works if its open... Continually learning.
Any movement on this? Would like to see more pics. If the truck still has the original engine you could look at the SPID on the glove box door and it will tell you the engine size.

I dunno if you ever found a rear, but you can buy a remanufactured gm 14 bolt dually axle with discs from a place called boyce equipment. I dealt with them a ton back when I had my deuce and a half. They rebuild their axles themselves so it's not chinese garbage.

I got the fenders aligned and are now attached to the bed. the next step is to get the plastic bed liner out so I can get to the bed bolts.
Also both trucks are now at the same place, my yard. The dually needs some break lines because somebody cut them at every corner.
