I'm actually going to be driving through Calgary area this fall! Do you think I could come grab a few/maybe figure out an install while I'm on the road? If they're flexible enough I'm not really against just using metal screws to pass em through the front bumper.
I'll take some pics and post them.

The 7.25" wide one mounts on a horizontal surface, probably good for bumper.
The 3.5" mounts on horizontal from underneath, good for side under rockers.

Ay these are awesome! I'll definitely be interested in coming to pick those up in Calgary this september if that works for you?

Don't want to make you go out and measure them again, but would you say the 7.25 inch is the same width or longer than the front bumper of a ranger?

I'll see if I can get more. Right now I'm not sure if I have enough of the 7.25". What I have would be 2 piece to cover the front of a truck or car.

Folks!

The electric power steering pump has been acquired!

I'm hoping to install it before the big trip planned for the end of the summer, but I need to find some time in between to have the truck apart and out of operation for a few days.
Product photo of Volvo electronic power steering pump

Here it is, a Volvo Electric-Pneumatic power steering pump. It's from that wonderful era where Ford actually owned Volvo, so it's actually a FoMoCo part!

The gentleman I bought it from included an 80 Amp relay and a dial-controller. I'm also going to be wiring it to be manually powered off, so that at cruise there will be less draw on the alternator, and if it consumes a little too much power, a chance for the battery to recharge. I may also rig it to turn on every now and then when it's shut off so that the fluid gets a moment to circulate.

The plan is to first delete the existing pump, and size up a new belt before hand, then mount and install the new electro pump.

Wiring is gonna be pretty because thankfully the guy had it installed in something previously, and included a really nice well put together harness

Couple things I gotta figure out, please gimme ur suggestions!:
  • Hoses and fittings, He did include a nice AN6 fitting, which I'm hopping I can make work with the existing items on the truck, hopefully. The return line I'm really not sure of though. Picture below
    Open photo
  • Where the hell am I gonna put this thing? Bolting it in where the existing pump is currently is basically a no go option because obviously there's no existing mount, and the space required for the electro pump is much larger. Short of also deleting the AC without any sort of option to replace it. If the AC was removed though, I could extend out the battery tray giving me more room for all the miscellaneous electronics under the hood, and also the electric AC compressor. I might be able to install it somewhere unconventional underneath the vehicle, but it'll still need to be correctly aligned, not to mention safe from debris.

EDIT: I don't know why I assumed the AC compressor was actually closer to the battery tray the the stock Power steering pump, but it isnt! hurray! I can probably extend that battery tray or fab a mount off of it that'll hold the electro pump.
Looking forward to getting this in and seeing some more gains!

Posted this on the 3.0 engines section, but since you guys following this thread are a bit more familiar with the project overall I thought I'd ask your advice here too.

Anyone have some ideas for my belt following Powersteering + AC compressor delete?

Howdy folks,

I've got an ongoing project that involves deleting these two engine driven pumps, and replacing them with Electric driven ones. No need to discuss the merits of it, but needless to say its happening.

I'll be starting first with the power steering pump, and retaining the A/C compressor for at least a little while, if time and money work out however I'll also be deleting the A/C compressor sometime this year, so I'd like to figure out routing so I can get some belts ordered up and start the fab work that'll go into mounting things.

I'd REALLY love to avoid using dummy pulleys, as the room from the deletes is going to be essential in me actually being able to mount these remote accessories.

1. Power Steering delete only. I'm mainly concerned with the belt coming down from the AC compressor to the main crank pulley. To my eye in vehicle and in diagram, it looks like it'll rub against the tensioner as you can see from my terrible diagram.

Am I missing something? I know the ribbed side of belts can run on smooth pulleys like idler and tensioners, but I just can't think of a way to get this to work with existing pulley locations short of it clearing the idler?

2. AC and Powersteering delete:

The only way I can see this working with stock locations is by using a double sided ridged belt, which who knows if they make them in the length I need. I could delete the Idler pulley and just have the tensioner (With a ridged pulley) using the following routing.

Question is, am I missing something? Am I just a part away from being able to use standard single-sided belts?

If anyone has any ideas let me know!

I think the best approach is to see if you will need an idler pulley for proper belt routing or if you will need to change out a pulley so ribs are facing where they should and the back of the belt where it should. Once you figure that out, you should be able to take and old belt and cut it to length to figure out the size belt you need to fit and run what is left.

Personally, I wouldn't delete the AC. It's not dragging much unless you've got your HVAC set to a couple of positions. The plan is to do long trips in this truck right? I wouldn't be removing creature comforts, even if they cost me a couple of bucks in fuel every trip.

if you end up deleting stuff though, you can get stretch fit belts so you could also delete a tensioner

I'll just be deleting the belt driven AC compressor and replacing it with a 12 Volt Electric AC compressor, but I'm not in a rush to do it as I need to work on other parts of the vehicle first in order to support it.

Specifically my energy storage. With just a 130A alternator for charging, and a standard lead-acid automotive battery, there's maybe only marginal benefits to fuel economy that will never recoup the cost of the electric compressor. Not to mention the unit I have peaks at 1000 watts of draw, meaning with everything in the truck powered on I'll probably outpace supply.

However, a large AGM battery paired with rooftop solar and a typical 120v household plug, the added utility of being able to run my A/C with the engine off will add extra comfort that I can only get from this setup, with the added benefit of being built into the vehicle and not an entirely separate system.

Given that I live in a no-A/C-necessary part of the world for at minimum 6 months of the year, I'll see a benefit in those months replacing the belt driven compressor in those months easily, and on most days where ambient temperatures are below 20C.

I definitely wouldn't take this thing on any big summer road trips without air conditioning, we're lined up to drive from Ontario to the Yukon at the end of the summer this year, hence why I'm hoping to just install the electric powersteering pump, but it may be an all or nothing game if I can't find a good interim solution.

I had heard of stretch belts but I've been pretty wary, I'm the kind of guy to always bring spares of things like belts, plugs and plug wires on big road trips.

What's the lifetime of these belts like?

i googled them but i cannot remember that. the video made me laugh because the way to install them looked just like the way you could put an alternator belt on an old air cooled vw that was running, with a screwdriver.

Honestly, a stretch belt might just be the way to go for both situations, I'll need to find the length I'll need for either scenarios and go through a bit of trial and error, but gates at least does in fact make 6 rib stretch belts in lengths up to 40 inches, which could be sufficient for my use case.

Just curious, when you say "rooftop solar" are you talking about the roof of the truck or of your house?

EDIT: Somehow I missed that you said you have a 1000W compressor- that was going to be my question, have you run the math on how many watts of solar you could fit on the truck? Wasn't sure if you were suggesting ypu could run the compressor in the driveway to "pre cool" the cabin or if you're planning to run it while parked in the wild.
