Hey everyone. My local advanced auto parts store has been very kind and patient with me throughout my search for the perfect clutch combo. Having not found proper clutch information, I just dove head first to see what I could make work.

So far, my attempts have been unsuccessful.

I’d come across a forum that stated:
-99-03 F150 M5R2 from a 4.2 V6
-94-96 F150 302 164T 50oz balance flywheel
-94-96 F150 302 clutch disc and pressure plate

When I purchased this combo, (flywheel/clutch plate) the splines on the clutch disc were too small for the input shaft in my M5R2.

Trans is from a 98 F150 4.2.

Does anyone know exactly where to purchase the working clutch combination? The only brand I’ve gone with is the Luk brand from Advanced. Not for lack of funds, but more for convenience.

Thank you!

As far as I know the clutch and flywheel should physically swap between the 4.9 and 5.0, I don’t know about the 4.2. Besides the balance weight in the flywheel.

I honestly thought the 4.2 used a T-5 like the 3.8.

I have a full set of if 4.9 clutch, flywheel, pressure plate on the shelf. If you want me to take a measurement of something, let me know.

Thank you, Roert!
I know this transmission to be a F75A (R2). I will send you a DM.

I have figured out that my input shaft diameter is 1-1/8”. The clutch kits for the F150 5.0 are all coming back as 1-1/16”.

Putting my drawing here. Measures 1 1/16" valley to valley. From a 4.9 clutch, should be the same as a 5.0

Drawings always make this easier. I am going to pick up a caliper micro. and measure mine out.
Thank you, again. I’ll let you know what I find.

I'm assuming its a 5.0 you are putting in the truck. What did the engine come out of?

I'm not expert but that may have an effect.

All good! My input shaft reads exactly the same as your illustration, which is the first time in about a week that I’ve not felt anxious about it.

The engine is out of a 97 Mercury Mountaineer.

I’ve got a flywheel that meets the standards, but clutch combos have been either too small to mount to the flywheel… but spline to the trans, or too small diameter to spline into the trans, but the right diameter to fit the flywheel.

This anomaly had me investigating a slew of different combinations, thinking that I’d perhaps had one or both wrong in every scenario.

So far, the trans checks out to be the R2, and I yanked the engine out of the Mountie myself. So, I know those 2 variables are constant. I’m just confused as to why the combination I’d listed (94-96 F150 5.0) worked for others, but not for me.

Honestly I am not familiar enough with the differences in these engines and transmissions.

Here is an old thread on Pirate4x4, https://www.pirate4x4.com/threads/4-2-bellhousing.369596/ , nothing conclusive but some guess work on what would be necessary to convert 4.2 trans to 5.0 engine.

I have a T-5 from a 3.8 on a pallet in my shop, I can take some measurements of the bolt locations on the flywheel. Should be the same as a 4.2. Don't think that would help much.

The boot holes for bolting the flywheel to the pressure plate are about 12 1/4” / 12 5/16” center to center.

That fly wheel is for a 3.8 with a t-5.

Wow, I appreciate the measurements!

honestly, every flywheel I’ve tried bolts right up to the engine. The issue is the pressure plate lining up to the flywheel, and the correct spline diameter. Seems like the ones big enough to bolt to the flywheel, have a smaller clutch plate diameter (to input shaft) and vice versa.

I found a youtuber who has the R2 swap, but didn’t post much on the details of how he setup the trans. I’ve messaged him, and we’ll see what he says!

Btw the id on the spline of the clutch is the same and the other one.
