M5OD Transmission question

Has anyone seen an M5OD Transmission with only upper bell housing bolt holes? Just picked up what looks to be like an M5ODR1 Transmission (looks identical to the one removed from the 94 Mazda B4000/Ranger I drive). The only difference looked to be the front drive line output shaft. So the 4WD Transfer Case bolted right up to it, everything spins as it should, My only problem is I didn't notice that there was not any lower bell housing bolt holes. Was just curious if anyone had ever seen this, Guess i'm going to try to drill some holes in the bell housing tomorrow.


Any info would be much obliged, I searched the internet and forums with no luck.

The M5OD came behind different motors and because they do not have a changeable bell housing you need one designed for the motor you have. This would explain the bell housing bolt hole issues you are facing.

Yeah, that... there's 5 versions, two of which will fit a 4.0L, the SOHC 4.0 had an upper bellhousing hole in a different spot... The other versions are for the 3.0L and one for the 2.3/2.5L Lima and one for the 2.3L duratec (but that one was never available in 4x4). If it was bolted up to a 2.9L or 4.0L it will fit your 4.0L, if it is from a 2.3L or 3.0L it wont fit...

I'm guessing it came from a 2.9 truck because those did not have bolts through the bottom into the oil pan like 4.0s did.
