How much abuse can the R2 take? Specifically one from a '98 F150 with a 4.2 V6. By abuse I mean, wide open, on the floorboard, stab the clutch and bang it through the gears. The more I drive my truck the more I wish I had an overdrive transmission but the R2 is my only option cost wise.

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
Sub 350 tq?

If it's fresh...it will make some miles.

Anything over 300 tq be smooth.

Should be under 350ft lbs. It's just a used transmission with unknown miles. Correction on my part, it's out of an '02 F150 if they're any different.

No hole for speedometer drive FWIW. 97 and maybe 98 had the hole but guts inside for a VSS, can be adapted using parts from an older M5OD to run a speedo.

They got better as time went on. I would pop the cover off and check out the innerds though.

ZF 5 speed from an early 90's 2wd F250? Kind of a 5 speed school bus trans though if you know what I mean.

Those M5ODs should be fine for your purposes.

Yeahhhhh I had to put a T5 in my ranger. I had a one of those.... the slave cylinder went out very fast for a brand new one. But with that said that transmission probably wasn't gonna last much longer. It really didnt like shifting fast.... at all.....

Honestly I would have spent the money on a T5 the first time If I wasn't so cheap...

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

but yes. The trans will hold fine. Replace the leaking shifter rail plugs. Run either mercon v fluid. Or synchromesh fluid. And shift it like a truck. She’ll be fine.

After 93- they had no provision for speed sensor. You can swap the tail shaft with a 88-92 model. But you’ll also need the gear. And retaining ball to hold the gear.

I’m going to experiment if you can drill the case for a speed sensor.

Yes, that's what the OD stands for. The R2 would be my only OD option as far as cost goes. No T5s, TKOs or ZFs or any other OD.
