lubricating the spare tire wench

Having had to actually use the spare tire, first time no doubt, on my 2002 Ranger, I'm wondering if I shouldn't lubricate the bearings in the spare tire wench? Trouble here, is that the wench is shielded from below and I cannot see to lubricate the wench.

Anyone else deal with this?

Well let's get real on wrench lubrication because going in dry isn't going to help anyone!

The "winch" that holds your spare tire is sealed and filled with grease. After the cable brakes and you lose your spare feel free to open it up and see how it works. Pretty neat really.

The "spare tire wrench" has no moving parts, at least mine doesn't. No need to lube.

Wench... you gotta figure that out on your own.

Ok wench jokes aside... I pull the tire down once a year, clean the whole winch assembly and area that was hidden by the tire, clean and grease the cable, then spray some fluid film all over the whole thing and put the tire back up.

Oh, and good idea to look at the date on the spare. If it's over 10 years old you should probably look for a new one. Tires go bad even if they aren't used and otherwise look fine. Nothing worse than getting a flat, putting the spare on, driving 2 miles only to have it too go flat.

I had 2 Rangers with spare tire winches. I would drop the tire to the floor and stick the nozzle of my Cyclo Breakaway spray oil into the hole the cable passes through and give it a 2-3 second shot about twice a year. I never needed to use my spare but I know the winch would have worked. I'm sure NH uses more salt than Co but extra lube won't hurt anything.
