Yes, you need a machine to "pull a vacuum" on the system, this also tests if there are still leaks, i.e. they will leave it with vacuum at a set negative pressure for a few minutes, if it holds then no leaks

Moisture in the outside air causes issues inside any AC system, that's why you always need to replace the receiver/dryer if system is ever opened or goes to 0 psi pressure internally, its a cheap part
The dryer is like those little packages in electronics boxes used to absorb moisture
You should also replace the Orifice tube, also cheap part
This is assuming you found all the leaks and replaced or repaired those parts

BTW... there is a fool proof method to fill your A/C system everytime to the correct amount of refrigerant. Without gauges and weighing the charge. Regardless of what Scotty says.

Nothing is "fool proof", not while we are making better fools every day

Progress sucks some times

Had a Vacuum pump from harbor for many years. The A/C systems i serviced were all R12. Had about 10 cases after they went to R134A. All the R12 systems that we owned went tats up and the cans are gone and the vacuum pump is still in the garage. LOL

Come on Mr. Gump. You're just jealous. Scotty has a shirt with his name on it and you don't.

Crossed threads are tight threads.
A person that repairs AC systems for a living would have to be an idiot to recommend a Stop Leak product, it would be the same as sending a client to another AC guy
They should say its bad and ruins the system, if they are smart
So grain of salt on what they say about those products

Been thru the same with Stop leak products for cooling systems, or head gasket leaks, products do work for SOME leaks but not all

And "trans fix" for automatics, swells gaskets and seals to get pressure back up(internal leaks) and does work for some issues

And no harm done since you would flush the system when doing a proper repair
They are all just temp fixes, and no professional mechanic would or should recommend any of them, its not in their best interest to do so

Back a few years, I got a stone chip in the windshield, had read about using a resin to fix it, asked my local glass guy about it and he said "NO WAY, windshield is structural, its the devils work you are asking for!"
Now, fixing chips and cracks in windshields is one the biggest parts of his business
I asked about what he had said before, and he said "well the product is better than before" :)

If you are a professional then you need to protect your profession, so grain of salt
Depends, when the ac guy is your buddy fixing your truck for free and just wants to conclude the assistance also tells me stop leak sucks. He even explained why and it made sense.

2 kinds of AC guys, or guys in general...Honest and not. A good example is mini split ac systems.

My buddy refuses to install them, because they just about always leak. When he does have to install them, he will solder or braze the connections together, so that he will not have to go back and re-fill it for free.

Another shady AC guy I sorta know loves mini split systems because they leak, he charges $80 +freon for a refill, and that's his bread & butter. But at least he is not casing the joint to rob it later.... I know of an even shadier AC guy that does that.
