Looking to swap my 99 4.0 automatic with a v8. What's the most budget friendly way?

Basically my head gaskets have a small leak that I temporarily fixed with blue devil. Instead of completely rebuilding the engine why not just swap a v8? I've heard my trim level would be the easiest. What would I need and how much should I expect it to cost me?

Easiest way is to find a V8 Explorer of the same or similar vintage and throw everything in.

At the very least you will need an engine, transmission, wiring, and computer.

Costs will vary wildly depending on location, market, method of acquisition of parts (buying things piece-meal is more expensive than buying a whole vehicle with everything, is more expensive than stealing a whole vehicle with everything, etc) and if you have the skills/ability/facility to do the work yourself or if you have to pay for some or all of it to be done.

OK so I'll still need a transmission even though I already have a 4.0?

The 4.0 and 5.0 do not share a bell housing pattern, and the 4.0 itself doesn't work well as a transmission, so yes, you need a transmission.
