Hey I mean if you can use that app to hire a random stranger to go buy you a sandwich and put a bookshelf together, I'm sure you can find someone on there to do an engine swap lol.

A shop doesn't want to get upside down on it.

It took me a month of evenings and weekends to get my swap done (everything but exhaust) That is a caveman crude 1985 with a carb.

So they take a junk truck and put 40 hours (low) into it at say $120 an hour and they are into this almost $5k plus parts. You get the bill and say "well that is way too much, you can just keep it!"

And then they get a $2,000 truck to sell. They are farther ahead to just decline it from the start.

10k would be about right for a fresh 5.0l and transmission installed in a non-V8 vehicle, alot of NEW custom parts needed

Its not like a shop can just swap in used parts and then warranty them, which is what most clients would expect, a warranty

If you buy a 1996-2001 Explorer V8 and swap power train over to 1996 Ranger then you have a used engine and trans and computer and wiring
You can probably do that swap for parts cost of $3,500, i.e. old rusty V8 explorer cost plus extras
Labor would probably be 40-50hours, not counting searching for a part, lol

Shops charge $75 to $110/hour, so say $5,000
$8,500 for a finished V8 Ranger with a USED V8 and trans, no warranty
That extra $1,500 for full warranty isn't that bad

Here is where I was going to start. Sounds like I'll be better off with my 2.3

I assumed that I could have parts and labor for 5k

Hi RonD. Is it possible for an explorer from the model year you mentioned, especially 2001 easily swap into a 1995 ranger 3.0l automatic rear wheel drive? Would there be problem stemming from the PATs?

Most salvage yards have a year warranty on their engines/transmissions, shops install used stuff all the time.

Happens all the time. They are the go-to swap host for RBV's.

PATS can be worked around or outright deleted.

RWD will generally require a different transmission as 99% of the 5.0 Explorers out there are AWD. They made a few 2wd ones (mainly in the southern US) but they are pretty scarce. Personally I have never seen one but a 2wd Explorer of any sort is rare around me.

I have a 2wd 5.0 Explorer trans in the back of the storage unit. I'm just not confident on its condition (it sat outside for a -long- time after finishing my swap).

You can ask for a print out of the estimate and see why they are asking that amount. You might be getting a new FI engine that has 500HP. Doubtful but you have to see what they are charging you for before you think its too much.
