I got a 1994 Ford Ranger with 4.0. I'm looking for an adapter to bolt a 700R4 GM trans behind it I've seen them just trying to track one down.

I would love to find one as well doesn't seem like anyone makes them anymore all posts about it are from 2003 when these trucks were 7-10 years old any probably still had good life in the transmissons now when they 25 years old 500k miles and the trans shit bolts getting onto the free way and there aren't no where to be found lol

How much would this adapter usually cost? $500? For that money or just a tiny bit more, you can use one of the better Ford electronic overdrive transmissions that bolt to the 4.0, and buy a controller to run it. The controller is going to cost you the $500+, the reason I am asking. And you get some neat features with the controller, like tow/haul modes and manual shifting capability.

Well, to be fair, GM hasn't made a 700R4 in 30 years either... they were popular behind 4.0s because you can buy a really awesome 700R4 off the shelf for about as much as a stock A4LD rebuild costs. And it's all hydraulically controlled...no sensors or anything to mess with.

I'm not aware of any aftermarket controllers for Ranger automatics, who sells them? I know you can get one for the AODE/E4OD/4R70W etc

out of curiosity i gotta ask...of all the options why a 700r4?
anyways, ID DESIGNS used to make one advertised as a turbo400 adapter but its the same for the 700r4
you can probably shoot them an email and ask for one

Because 25-30 years ago that was one of 2 options with overdrive, the other being a 200-4R... I’ll take a 700r4 over a 200-4r any day.

I think they were still making 700R4 adapters up till a few years ago. And that logic is still true, if you want a hydraulically controlled automatic with overdrive, your options are very limited to what, A4LD, AOD, 700R4, 200R4 and some Chrysler autos? Then what t-case are you gonna put behind it...?

These days it's easy to buy a control box for your automatic of choice but that stuff didn't exist until just a few years ago.

It doesn’t make sense to make an adapter for a 25 year old Ford engine (that was only available in Rangers and Explorers) to adapt it to a 25 year old GM trans???? That sounds like a great idea.

Is the 5R55E considered a good transmission? They came behind 4.0 after 1997 and the junkyards want from $500-$800 for a used one.

This controller is supposed to support the 5r55e. A little more expensive than I figured. $750+200 for the wiring harness.

I’m not a trans expert, but I’ve replaced more bad 200-4rs than 700R4s. Going by your screen name... you may know better.
