I'm an owner of a '11 Ranger 2.3L 4cyl automatic, and possibly about to purchase a' 94 manual.

99.99% positive after replacing the shift solenoids in my '11 that the issue does indeed lie in the tranny and I'm getting ready to take it out of commission to tackle an increasingly daunting to-do list on it.

I'm the meantime I need a vehichle and I found a' 94 Ranger. The dude said it wasnt driving because of the MAF sensor needing to be replaced, but after looking it over both my father and I think it's something in the fuel system causing the issues. The guy said he replaced the fuel pump and filter, but we're thinking the truck had been sitting, and since he didn't replace or clean out the tank as soon as he replaced the pump, whatever was in the tank screwed it again.

Before the purchase is made official I'm trying to price check and find the parts we need but I'm finding it pretty difficult to find the fuel tank for a '94. Was wondering if anyone knows if the tank is the same as a tank from a different year or what would be the best way to go about that issue.

My brother has an' 87 Ranger, and now with my two I'm starting to notice a trend. I'm officially hooked on Rangers and if anyone who knows what the heck they are doin would like to take me under their wing and mentor me/answer the ton and one questions I have I would be eternally grateful.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
We can all help mentor you from afar. We do have some members in Texas. I just don’t know how close they are to you.

From afar is totally acceptable, honestly any help and advice is appreciated. I have a laundry list of repairs and/or replacements I'm about to take on with my '11, and I feel it would be a similar story with the' 94 if I wind up deciding to go through with it. I have a ton of questions that Google hasn't been super helpful with answering 😂

I don’t think Google has ever worked on a Ranger.

If you are yard shopping a tank from a 93 should also fit, and possibly a 92. 1995 started OBDII and I don't know what differences may come about from that.

Unplugging the MAF should let it run just fine if that is indeed the issue.

What exactly does it do or not do? Is it a crank no start, or does it run, just poorly enough that it can't be driven?

Google works just fine on a Ranger. Every Google search I have ever done pertaining to a Ford Ranger, a Polaris Ranger, and even a few about the Texas Rangers (Law enforcement division and Sportsball team) have lead me right back here.

I tried driving it yesterday, it cranks and will idle until I assume it runs out of gas, there is some sounds that are hard to discern thanks to an exhaust leak that is louder. When I drove it, it shifted into first beautifully, drove it for about 100ft, shifted into reverse-still doing good, back into first and kept going, into second and at second gear it lost all torque and power. I was going up a very slight incline as I went into 2nd, but I tried cranking it and driving in 1st again and nothing.

I could smell gas while I was driving it, but didn't know if that could potentially be due to the exhaust leak or not. There also was a whining sound while I drove it but only in gear and while moving. (not a belt whine, I don't know what was causing it but I know the sound of a belt whine and this sounded whsitle-ier if that makes any sense 🤣😅)

And thanks for the tip about the 92&93 tanks. I kinda figured but wasn't sure especially regarding 95+ because of the OBDII change like you brought up.

I know for a fact that a tank from a ‘97 will fit in a ‘94, In fact the ‘97 tank I put in my ‘94 was bigger, my original tank was the normal 14.5 gallons and the ‘97 tank I put in is a 20 gallon, its longer at the back but there was plenty of room between the back of the rear axle. Both trucks were the same stlye (reg cab longbed)

Nice!! I've noticed a lot of parts stay pretty consistent along the Ranger line, even through different generations, as long as it's the same style model, but I've also seen differences as well. This totally gives me a darn good idea of a year range I can look for. Y'all are the bomb diggities. 😍

From your description, your idea that it may be crap in the tank plugging the intake screen or filter makes sense. Since the jy tank may not be any better, another alternative is to remove the existing tank, flush it out and coat it with that stuff that seals up all the corrosion and junk. I've not used that personally, but I know others who have and its worked well for them.

The newer tanks are plastic = no rust unless it comes from the gas station.

I'm hoping to possibly find a new aftermarket one, but will be looking around the JY if I'm unable to find one or if the cost insane so I'll definitely keep that in mind!!!
