For your consideration: The location of gauge sensor for engine temp.

On 1992 Ranger 4.0L 4x4 supercab.

Manual has no info on where this thing is so I was looking in all the wrong places. Hope it helps future people. (Hello future people!)

Took the single wire off, shorted to ground and needle went to max- bad sensor. Likely just crud buildup.

Good, no electrical problems! :icon_thumby:

Out with the old- in with the new!

The gauge now works, but it never quite makes it even near the middle.. Maybe time for a new engine soon too as this one has pushrod tick to the extreme.

Any suggestions about that? Keep with the 4.0 or something else?

Try installing a new thermostat.

$8 well spent, since it regulates the temperature of the coolant that your new sensor is reporting.

If you don't want to spend the $8, slap a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator for a short drive. If the temp climbs higher, you can replace the thermostat with more confidence that it'll help.

4.0L is a good engine, unless you're trying to tow something you shouldn't be, I'd certainly keep/rebuild it.

Agreed, flush your cooling system out good and then put a new t-stat in (stock 190-195°).

Alrighty, thanks guys!

On parts searches I get a lot of the standard 195* one, but there is a premium one that I can't seem to find- what does it do that's so special?

Can the temp sending sensor change the idle and performance of the 4.0?

Yes, the temp sensor can. Don't confuse the temp sensor with the temp sender.
