I had installed a chrome license plate frame with a clear cover. I found that the tailgate hits it when opened....

suggestions for a fix ?

My credo
If it's not broken Don't Fix It!
Remove it? That should about fix the issues. :icon_rofl:

What part is hitting the gate? Your picture really doesn't show the issue other than the clear cover being puffed out from the plate quite a bit.

1. Remove the frame
2. Modify tailgate. Either cut a hole or dent it in with a medium sized hammer so it clears the frame
3. Don't open tailgate
4. Remove tailgate to eliminate temptation to open tailgate

Sorry, short of a custom bumper that moves the plate you don't have any really good options...

If you are just looking to protect the plate, I used a flat clear cover. The frame isn’t going to work.

Two things:

1) I have that same frame, it doesn't hit my tail gate.

2) Plate covers, even clear ones, are not street legal in PA.

you can see that the tail gate when fully open pushes against the plate frame & the piece that holds the plate.
yes the covers are illegal in PA but I have never been pulled over for using one (y)

Look again. I'm betting it does hit and pushes the plastic back... and you merely haven't noticed it.

Clear cover for front and just a black plastic surround for the rear.

For the rear I had to mount the bracket backwards and trim the plastic to keep it from hitting the tailgate when lowered.

:dntknw: Why would he comment about an '87 on the 2019-2020 Forum?

I guess the good news is my Model T roadster pickup has lots of clearance too... ;missingteeth;

after moving/watching the tail gate up & down a few times , looks like a thinner chrome frame will solve the problem.
now to find a thinner frame............
