All seems to be running fine, so ill go ahead and call this one a "safe" in my book. On a positive note, the mileage I've been seeing with the truck actually running at operating temp has been unbelievable. Hand calculated (Did these trucks even ever come with a lie-o-meter?) 21.27 light hwy driving (55-65 mph) and 18.2 once i mixed some city driving in there, old numbers were 16.17 light hwy and and mixed city driving. Towing my boat (1950-lbs) for the weekend nets me about 13 mpg. Crazy how much the engine temp can effect the mileage but i do understand why. This is all running non-ethanol premium, its all i ever run in anything i own, no exceptions.

My credo
If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
Don't feel too bad about a paper towel, one of my friends rebuilt the 455 in his Olds 442 and did far worse. He took the air filter off to tweak the carb adjustments and put the wingnut inside it, when he flipped the air cleaner over and put it back on he couldn't find the wingnut. He searched and couldn't find it so he put another one on and started it. He instantly knew where the wing nut was. Off came the heads.
