New to me 2000 Ranger XLT 3.0 4x4 4 door. AC blowing hot figured I recharge and hope for the best. Removed low pressure side cap and heard and felt freon or whatever was left leaking by. My question is, can I replace the valve or do I have to replace the dryer? Thanks

If the system has a leak, replace the accumulator (dryer). The schrader valve can usually be screwed out to replace, but a leaking system will usually have air in it and that can reduce the effeciency of the desicant in the accumulator. Besides, changing that valve will open the system anyway. I can't say its an absolute requirement to change the accumulator, but I'd recommend it just as a general practice.
