At some point there will be a standard charger, that is Licensed for use, similar to USB or HDMI
But we could end up with something like the Beta/VHS thing, lol

Since Apple is not involve there is hope of universal compatibility
Although Tesla is kind of Applesque in some things, so may not "play well with others"

But there is good money in Licensing so..........................maybe Elon Musk will go that way with Tesla's "Super Charger" technology

Apple phone chargers always baffled me. One side is a standard USB plug so they obviously accept that USB technology is better, yet they absolutely refuse to put a micro-usb or usb-C plug on the other end...

And there is literally no other reason for this other than they are just massive A-holes.

Itll never happen but these companies should work together to make the charging systems universal to all EV's....

I don't go to a special gas station to get Ford gasoline, I should'nt need a special station to get Rivian electricity...

But a collaborative network of universal charging stations wouldn't be profitable.
My understanding is that in Europe there's at least a standard for what connector is used for charging EV's. Not the case here...

And now Apple's gone through and swapped all their Lightning cables over to USB-C on the far end. So they recognize C as a great standard for incorporating into their laptops and wall chargers, but couldn't just swap the phones themselves over.

Yes, that's the business model they follow, Apple for LIFE
Apple builds a good product, so most have a brand loyalty that's actually re-enforced by the fact they can only use Apple cables or ??

Bang & Olufsen did this years ago, they built great audio/video systems but you were Bang & Olufsen for LIFE
Couldn't use anyone else's speakers or CD players, no connections or adapters would work
Had to be B & O
And that model worked for them

I've never owned an apple product and never will... Google isn't the best but at least their stuff isn't shuved down your throat like apple. Their software can be fiddled with, connectors are standard, you are not locked into only using their products, their apps, their cords etc.

Not a huge fan of the government or anything, so don't take this the wrong way. However, this might be a thing the government could do to help push along the EV. If the fed says everyone has to have the same plug end for their chargers, then it makes it easier to new manufactures to get into the game. As a consumer, it would help assure that i will have an easier time finding a place to charge my car while travels, making it more likely I would buy one.

A cheap Iphone is 100 times better then a cheap android phone. The os is designed for the device, so you don't have the issue of the software being too demanding for the hardware like you do with android phones.

I have an android S10e (the elcheapo model) as a personal phone, and an Iphone 8 (old model) as a work phone. There are about the same level price wise if i was going to go into the store and buy one. The Iphone works so much better I almost never use my personal phone.

This is my Ranger. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
The issue with this is Tesla for example has spent billions building their charging network. They could never recoup these costs by allowing other makers access to their network.

There is standard charging plugs, Tesla just designed their own with improvements to suit their needs. What really gives it the magic is the custom circuitry and software.

There's essentially only a few common ports
J1772(AC) is used at the shared level 2 charging stations
CCS(DC) is starting to become more common for fast charging
Tesla(AC/DC) made their own dual AC/DC charger years ago

Most of these vehicles come with a special home charging box that allows you to swap out connectors and use standard 110v wall(nema 5-15) or something like a welder outlet (nema 14-50) for faster charging rates.

There WILL be standardized plugs for vehicle charging, just like we have standardize wall outlets now, 15amp, 20amp, 40amp, ect

Licensing Tesla's system would make way more than Billions
But the first system is not always the best system so like Sony with Betamax, they lost millions because they wouldn't license it and VHS took over because it was cheap to license
Beta was technically the better system, but for the home user VHS was WAY BETTER, lol

So if Tesla gets charge times down to say 10min but another company does 12min for 1/2 the price..................
Its all about the consumer not the technology, when it comes to mass markets
You can have the best product but not the best sales

I.E. world wide sales smart phones
Android 72%
Apple 26%

Doing things wrong, until I get it right.
The GM system I saw, was a modular design where the motor, batteries and wheels where one unit, that disconnected from the chassis and another 'unit" was put in. It could be uses in the front or rear of the car depending on configuration, but it was the same "unit". The idea of getting a "bad" unit never came up, because they planned on having places "like a GMC gas station" where you pull your Chevy/GM up and the system replaced the depleted unit with a good/charged one. ARRRRG I wish I could find something on the interwebs about it. I saw this in the early 2000's and it has stuck with me. I keep waiting to see "that" tech pop up, but it probably has landed in the scrap heap some time ago.

At that point why even own the car? Just rent it if you're going to be swapping half of it every other day... :dunno:

People do engine swaps all the time. Same concept, change the bad for the good and keep it rolling.

Yes, but you don't do an engine swap everytime you run out of gas. :icon_rofl:
