Im 57 .. just needed a clunker around the house to do some work. Got this truck for a song and dance.

Ill have to search the forum to see if I can find info on how to ID the transmission.
The problem is that up to 45 there are not problems.

When I hit 55 and let off the gas, the tranny disengages and the engine just revs until the truck speed comes down to 40 or 45.

The question is, Has anyone experienced this issue and if so, was an external part the cause or was a rebuild necessary. If its a rebuild Ill probably just put a junk yard in there. My daughters boy friend is a jr Ford mechanic. He can do the swap but is not experienced in troubleshooting. He has already cleaned up the wiring this kid did. what a cluster. I guess the kid had a woofer installed. Wiring was pretty bad. Good Now.

Anyway ... any help or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards
Chris

If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you have an electrical problem
The unit in your truck is an A4LD. From what you described the transmission is not going into OD. 4th gear and converter lock up are electrically operated. I would look into the wiring, the picture is some troubleshooting tips.
Good luck

Thanks ..
One development.
The kid I bought it from told me it was a 2.9l ..the older 90 I had was a 2.9l and it was stamped on the engine. I went out there to look and its actually a 4.0. No stamp. The vin break down also says 4.0 and I looked at picks on the web. So its not a 2.9l its a 4.0l.

The sticker says model "T" which if Im not mistaken is also the A4LD.

So its really
1992 Ford XLT Ranger Extended 4.0l 4x4. I find it odd that this guy didnt know what he had. Which tells me he couldnt have done any work to it.

Thanks guys .. this fat ol body can actually get under it to check ... Ill check all the wiring under there. Is there a diagram out there anywhere (am a data guy just havent googeled yet).

Thanks alot for all the comments..
Regards
Chris

Ok guys .. I now see what your saying and this will be my approach.

Ill first try to trace wiring as best as I can and make sure everything is in good shape.
I need to do the tranny fluid anyway .. When I do that, I will also swap these parts.

1992 Ford Ranger xlt 4.0l 4x4 automatic

A4LD Master Valve Body Gasket Reseal Service Kit (1985-1994) 4WD
SKU: 3012D4WD

A4LD TCC Lockup Solenoid (1985-1995)
SKU: 3186A

A4LD 3-4 Shift Solenoid
SKU: 3115A

These folks have it all in stock and Ill compare with Rock auto.

I have watch a few you tube videos and read a few things here. Seems, at least the replacement, is pretty easy.
Hopefully this will be the fix. Then I can get started on the mess he left up front. Alignment and steering.

Thanks for pointing me in the what will hopefully be the right direction.
Regards
Chris

Definitely check wiring if you had a mess. 4.0, 3.0, 2.3 up to 1994 were all A4LD. I think the C3 was phased out in 1988 and the A4LD was used. Someone please correct me C3-A4LD crossover year.
Let me look to see if I might have a wiring diagram. Or at least PIN numbers on ECM so you can ohm them out.

Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.

The A4LD auto was first used in 1985 Ranger / Bronco II models, behind the 2.8L, and then in 1986 the 2.9L replaced the 2.8 as the V6 engine. I don't know for sure but I think that 1984 was the last year for the C3. The C3 is not a bad transmission, in my opinion.

You are correct, I was thinking of the C5 that was phased out 86-87

Here is all I’ve found on wiring, note power (red) is on and the PCM applies ground to energize solenoids.

Morning folks

Take a look at this video at 1:26. Dude need to go to wallys and buy a pan .. anyway ..

That guy has the same truck. It looks like the solenoids can be removed without dropping the valve body.

The reason I'm double checking is .. if all I have to do is drop the pan and filter and swap the solenoids .. that's something I can handle a few bolts and plugs.

If the valve body need to be dropped, I'll need to get someone to do it for me.

Seem from the real question is there enough room to get the old ones off and new ones on.

Thanks alot cor the help fellas.
