Are you sure you have it wired in right?

You have a waste spark ignition system?

I'm trying to pull from memory here... and I'm old... but aren't those wired a bit differently?

What is a waste spark system?

If your 4 cylinder has 8 spark plugs... it's a waste spark ignition.

Is it a waste spark 4 banger?

I don't have all the answers in memory.

But those systems are picky on where the tach signal comes from.

Do a little googling... I'm sure the answer on how to wire it can be found.

Well I’ve done plenty of that and found which wire to splice and I spliced into the correct one, isn’t there only one rpm wire? It wouldn’t make sense to have multiple. If I’m getting any reading at all I must be on the right wire, right?

Maybe...

But you have multiple coils... you might only be reading one... half speed.

@RonD you have anything to add?

I'll search in a bit... but I seem to remember something goofy with these set ups on the 8 plug 4 bangers.

Yea I’ve been to that exact website, if you read it and scroll down to the year of my truck you will see an explanation of what I did, on jegs tachometers there are purple or green and I tried both and only purple gives me a read

In my experience, on most vehicles moving down the road at highway speeds in a top (overdrive) gear, you will get about 25 mph for every 1,000 rpm. This means 60 mph in top gear would be about 2,500 rpm. See if your tach reads anywhere close to 2,500 rpm at that speed in top gear.

If your engine is turning over 5,000 rpm at 60 mph, you've got a real problem.

1995 2.3l Ranger, 3rd party tach needs to be hooked up to the tan/yellow wire that runs from PCM(engine computer) in engine bay to the back of the instrument cluster in the cab

Even if you don't have a tach on the cluster that wire is still there
If you do have a tach on the dash you can't use both so cut the tan/yellow wire

On the JEGS model use the Purple wire as the "tach input"
Green wire is just for engines with distributors

Make sure the black ground wire has a good ground
Hook up the 2 12volt wires as described

The white or orange wire is for back lights(dash lights) so in a 1995 would connected to a red/black wire on back of cluster or found at other dash light bulb locations or Dimmer Module

Calibration on JEGS looks to be "2 PPR (4 Cyl) 2000"
Other calibrations if "2" does show correct RPMs is 1 (2cyl) or 4 (8cyl)

If neither works then Tach is bad or not compatible
