I have a 1995 ford ranger. 2.3L i4. I bought a JEGS tachometer with a shift light (the one with rpm recall to set cylinders) and wired everything up, I’ve seen other sites that helped with the wiring so used those. I used the purple wire and spliced into the tan and yellow wire that gives me an rpm reading. It is just reading half. JEGS wants me to return it but before I do I’m wondering if anyone knows what could be the issue?

P.S. I am pretty much 100% sure that it is reading half rpm because I read somewhere that the factory rev limiter is set to 6250, got it up to rev limiting speed and the tach was reading around 3000. I attached a picture of the instructions to show that it was set to the correct cylinders and attached pictures of what I have it set at.

1st image Instructions
2nd Holding menu
3rd Releasing and setting to 2000 rpm for 4 cylinders
4th Pressing menu
5th Releasing menu(before engine start)
6th “Idle”

post P.S. I have tried setting the cylinders to different ones like 8 cylinders and 2 cylinders to see if the amount of spark plugs mattered at all but even when I change it to supposedly read for a different amount of cylinders, idle is exactly the same as is revving.

Any amount of help is greatly appreciated as I am stumped.

Is that 3000 rpm sitting still in neutral ?

Try it while driving.

I was driving and in gear got it close to redline(not actual rev limiter but pretty close) when I got to redline and rev limited I was driving but the clutch pedal was fully depressed. Actual 6250 rpm but read around 3000.

I was going around 45 and wanted to make sure that it was reading 1/2 speed so when I had some space from everyone else as not to bother anyone, I fully depressed the clutch pedal and brought it up to the rev limiting speed to confirm my suspicion. At rev limiting speed at factory 6250 the tachometer was reading around 3000 which is half of around 6000. Does this make sense? Just making sure I am not trying to sound sarcastic

Throttle slammed to the floor, first gear going as fast as you can, clutch pedal not being touched, reving the piss out of the engine.

Tach only reads 3000?

Yessir sorry I didn’t see the reply I didn’t get an alert, literally how I would describe it revving the absolute piss out of the engine until it sounds like it is literally going to blow it’s only reading 3000

I'm just trying to figure out if you're hitting the 3,000 rpm rev limiter.

Because the clutch pedal is depressed or transmission is in neutral.

Pretty sure this is in the automatics only
Is it normal for my truck to idle at 500 rpm??? This can’t be right, right? That’s one of the main reasons I thought it was reading half because my idle speed is so low and drops below 500 which isn’t even possible I’m pretty sure, right?

I think normal idle for a manual is something in the neighborhood of 700 rpm. There should be a sticker on the hood or the radiator support with that number on it.

Hm does this mean it’s reading correctly and my rev limiter is set at 3k-something?

My credo
Crossed threads are tight threads.
Maybe look up what your rpms should be at say 65mph based on a gearing/tire chart and compare it to what the tach says when your driving steady 65...
