Did you correct the speedometer/odometer when you install the 31" tires? If not you won't be able to compute the milage as the odometer will not record the actual milage nor will the speedometer be correct.

Just a thought.

You need to replace a little gear next to the transmission. if you go under the tech library. Click me.

That should help you out. BTW I have a 97 4.0 with 31x10.5 and it sounds like we have similar driving habits. I get around 280-300 mi/tank. That usually takes 18.1 or so gal. to fill up. I also do a lot of stop and go driving and for shorter periods. Usually 10-15 min at a time.

Yeh according to my tire size I am acctually getting around 320ish/tank. I also keep my OD off except when I am over 55 mph and that seems to help keeping the RPMs in a happy place so the truck isnt always shifting. Because it loves to slip into OD when i am doing 45-55

It amazes me how many people don't know how to measure fuel mileage.

Miles per TANK is irrelevant. Not only are there at least half a dozen different sizes for RBVs, but you don't REALLY drain anywhere near all of it out even if you let the engine stall.

Measure the amount of fuel you put IN.

Amazes me as well. I run the same tires except with a 5spd. I multiply by 1.055 because 31's are 5.5% larger in rolling diameter. When measuring fuel econ its important to always stop filling at the same point. Normally I just stop when the nozzle shuts off. When I'm really keeping track I go to the same pump at the same station. I go like this:

(Miles indicated)(1.055)/(Gallons put in) My normal driving is 70% city 10 minute trips. I get as high as 18mpg in the summer and usually in the 16's in the winter.

You know, for around $10, you can replace the speedometer drivegear and have the odometer be correct.... 5% is quite close to one tooth.

Quite literally, it's $10-$20 and about 45 seconds.

Yeah, that sucks alright. It may be time to fix it instead of getting rid of it.

How are the..../....what kind of shape are they in?...........

oxygen sensors?
air filter?
maf sensor?
spark plugs?
plug wires?
etc?

And most importantly...............Do you floor the pedal alot under 2500 rpm's?

I filled up yesterday & it took 18.1 gal with 302 miles (yes, I made my speedo accurate since I have 5.13's & 36" bias ply tires) on the trip meter since the previous fill up, combined highway & city driving. If my 4.0 is getting better than yours (assuming you are figuring your gas mileage correctly), something's wrong that needs attention or your driving habits might need to be adjusted.

You're still refering to a pisspoor way to measure fuel econ.
