I was totally ready to just bite the bullet and replace the steering box. It got downright sketchy on the highway.
Turns out the intermediate shaft between the steering column and steering box is set up to telescope slightly. There is supposed to be a plastic sleeve in between the two halves... mine had deteriorated due to age and had left the building.
I snagged a new to me shaft from the JY with an intact bushing and good rag joint and it steers great.
