Is charcoal can needed??

I wondering if black plastic charcoal can that's bolted the radiator support on the driverside is needed or not?I know a line is connected to top of gas tank.i ask because I need space for an overflow tank and my battery relocation to the driver side.

For the engine to operate, no. Legally, yes.

The tank still needs to vent though so you cant just plug the line. You could just move the canister somewhere else.

Does it matter have close or how far it is to the tank or engine?

Is it the old fashion canister that doesn't hook to the intake intake manifold or does it have a purge valve and all that? If its just the old can with a single line from the gas tank, jam it anywhere as long as its not near the exhaust. If it has a purge valve that connects into the intake manifold vacuum, you can still put it practically anywhere just be more careful as you obviously have an engine vacuum line attached that could cause issues if it breaks.

There was a line that connected to vacuum on top of the engine.

K then it has a purge valve setup. Somewhere on the line from the intake to the canister should be a little electric solenoid. That opens occasionally so the engine can suck the vapors out of the canister to "purge" the charcoal. You need to keep that intact, but can still move the canister.

I would try to use the charcoal canister system if possible. If you don't, you get a very strong gas smell around the vehicle. For it to work correctly, it should be mounted as low as possible like the factory had it. Gas fumes are heavier than air, and will naturally drift down the downward sloping lines to the canister.

I just did a lobotomy on my 1984, pulling the computer system off of it. I had a terrible gas smell after I would park it. What I did was hook the purge as a continuose purge through one of the very small plastic vacuum lines to the small port on top of the PCV valve. It works, but not as good as I would like. You have to be careful, the factory only purged the canister under certain conditions. Since I am purging all the time, I had to restrict the purging down a lot, and I don't think it's enough. I am going to have to do more research on how the older carbed systems worked and see if I can duplicate one of them. On the old system my BII had and the fuel injection systems, the computer decides when to purge and opens a solenoid.

Pretty sure pre EFI systems that still used a purge valve used a vacuum valve setup similar to an EGR valve that only allowed it to open under a specific mild vacuum such as experienced when cruising on the highway. Too high or too low vacuum and it would be closed.

But there are systems that use a charcoal canister with no purge valve. The vapors just constantly filter through the charcoal before being vented out into the air. They don't work nearly as good as a purge setup but they are much better than just having an open hose to vent the gas tank.

It can be put almost anywhere it will fit, just keep it up high, above the level of the fuel tank.

My 67 c-10 had the gas tank in the cab behind the seat and no form of canister. Ahhhh I miss getting high for the first 30 minutes I drove after filling the tank.

I don't recall seeing a solenoid connected to it?one of the lines came off top of engine that had 3 or 4 lines connected to it.like a splitter of some sort.maybe solenoid was mounted elsewhere maybe?

Both there were definitely 2 lines connected to cannister.one from gas tank and 1 line from top of engine
