You can use gear lube in that but it calls for GL-4 (not GL-5) which is very hard to find and often contains corrosive additives. I had GL-4 90w in mine and it was a real bear to shift in cold weather. Personally, I would try Pennzoil or Valvoline Synchromesh MTF fluid, you can get it easily at O'Reilly and it will work perfectly in that transmission.
Those transmissions are pretty notorious for chewing up input shaft bearings. I believe you can change that bearing without completely disassembling the transmission. Could be the source of your noise or it could be something else.
