problem was a combination of things. looks like the cross member for the trans mount has a slight curve. not sure if that's factory or if i hit something. and the trans mount deffinitely leans. the mount is from the donner, the cross member was as ammco installed it- i pulled the trans out the front. so when i put the motor back in and bolted it to the trans, it was in the wrong place by about 1 1/2 inches. dropping the member allowed the motor to move, giving me access to get the top mounts in place and bolted in (except for one bolt on the drivers side that is being a bitch). so all in all, just me being a dumbass
