Intake swap

Just got H.O. 5.0 from the junkyard. Swapping the efi for my carb setup. When I pulled the stock intake off I noticed some carbon buildup, it looked like charcoal bricks stuck the the interior walls? Was wondering what this is? And what's the best way to clean it out? Also. What's the best way to clean off the old gasket with out it getting all over the place and falling inside the block? Thanks. The buildup is probably just carbon and coke from the EGR and PCV systems.

As for how to get rid of it, I usually just mess around with a pick. Let that stuff fall in, it will get blown through the cylinders and exit the exhaust.


To get the gasket off, I just use a razor and be careful.

I always have a roll of paper towels handy and stuff them in the holes. Then I use my ShopVac to suck any debris and the paper towel out. If you are having an issue getting the gasket off, I'm sure you mean the black factory paper gasket. A razor is effective, but I've also used Permatex Gasket remover. You spray it on and let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes, and then the gasket comes off fairly easy. I had to go over it a couple of times. I don't believe the Permatex product works on silicone gaskets though.

Yea, it's a paper like gasket. I'll pick up some of that remover. Can't hurt to try tht first. Thanks

If they're steel heads, just use a die grinder w/ a wire wheel attachment. And I agree w/ shane, stuff paper towels in there and then suck everything out w/ a shop-vac.
