Hi, i’m going to install an AL4D transmission in my 86 with the 2.9. What all do I need to install it, like gaskets and what? I’ve never put in a transmission before so I’m looking to find out everything i need to order to put it in. Thank you

First and foremost on your FIRST Automatic install

The Torque Converter MUST be install/seated in the transmission FIRST!!!!!!

Video here:

All Automatics are the same, not a Ford thing

No gaskets are needed, rear driveshaft seal can be done

Also engines Rear Main seal can be done when transmission is off

The thin metal plate between engine and transmission is IMPORTANT, its called a Block Plate, AKA Bellhousing separator plate, it is used to align starter motor, make sure it gets put back in

My credo
Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.
^^^ That's excellent advice. To that, I can only add a few things from my fun times with the A4LD.

The exhaust Y-pipe won't be fun; hit all of the bolts well in advance with PB Blaster, Kriol, or even ATF. The only gasket you'll likely need is the one between the cat and the Y-pipe.

The block plate IS very important, and make sure that the hollow locator dowels at the 9 and 3 o'clock bolt positions are in place when the new mission goes in.

Check the flexplate very carefully for stress cracks around the crank bolt holes (common failure point).

As Ron said, if the engine rear main seal shows any sign of leakage, change it while you're doing the swap.

If your truck does not have an auxiliary ATF cooler, add one.

Good luck!

A u-joint and some long extensions are very handy as well. Or a flex head ratchet can work from above. 13 mm iirc
