Hi. My truck starts on the wrong postion. I believe it quick starts on the “accessory” position. First I thought it was be used I still led a new stereo but it was just a coincidence. what I read on the internet is that it may be a ignition switch problem. So I bought a new one and tried to install it but I hit a wall. The screw that holds the connector and switch is stripped. No matter which way I turn it. It just goes on forever. Is there anyway around this? Do I have to drill it out? And if so how should I do it? I attached a picture. Thank you.

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
You meed to rewire your stereo and get stuff working the way it should. At this point you really don’t know exactly what is messed up.

I had pretty much same problem. The truck would start in the "Acc" position, my radio did power up , but sometimes no audio, other time audio did work, it was intermittent. The stereo always had power to it regardless. Wiring diagram factory does show 2 power wires to the radio circuit, one is for "Start " position only. The ignition switch did fix the problem on my 2007 ranger.

Yes +1 ^^^^

You mis-wired Radio

There is a MUTE ON START wire in Ranger's radio wiring harness
That should NOT BE hooked up except to the "Mute on start" wire of a new radio, which most do not have, lol

2004 radio diagram here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/pdf_documents/2004_Ranger_Radio_Wiring_WithoutAudiophile.pdf

Fuse 21 is "hot in start", the red/black stripe wire at radio
When fuse 21 has 12volts the starter relay is activated

If you were to hook up that red/black wire to say the Black/pink wire, fuse 6 hot in acc/run, then starter would activate with key in ACC

Pull out radio and disconnect that red/black wire and tape its end, so it can't short out

And no you can't pull out fuse 21, then you wouldn't have starter activation in any key position

I can not speak for member 6040, but I did not touch the wiring on my stereo/radio. I am simply saying I looked at the factory wiring diagram, saw what was common with my radio problems and what position my truck was starting in "ACC" and replaced the ignition switch.
