You're in California, you have pick-n-pull's all over, looks like several of them have plenty of Rangers to choose from.

Your truck is 4th generation. 1998 - 2003 so, anything in those years will be perfect. 5th gen, 2004-2011 will also fit. But there could be tiny little differences in body lines. I don't think it would be very noticeable.

Thanks for your reply
I found a 1997 bed, would that work? or would i have problems?
I thought i had a 3rd generation Ford Ranger 1998-2011. Your saying i have a 4th gen? How is my truck a 4th gen? Or what makes it a 4th gen? and not a 3rd gen?

I visited there website and didn't find anything within a reasonable driving distance but maybe in the future there may be one

The 97 will bolt on. But there will be slight differences in body styling. Most people would've know the difference.

There are debates about the Ranger definitions. Wikipedia is wrong. But Jim has gone to great measure to research and verify the generation lineup we use here on this site. More info here.

When buying a bed from a parts yard what do i look for? What do i check? I was going to go to pick your part. How do i know if the bed is good or bad besides the obvious? Do i have to get beneath it and check the mounts? I am not a mechanic so i would have to look up what to look for.

Just look for overall condition. Check the bottom for rust, especially the crossbar pieces welded on the bottom.

Removal isn't complicated. Unplug the wiring harness for the lights at the back. Then remove the 6 bolts holding it on. I believe it takes a T-55 Torx for the bolts. You will want a long breaker bar and maybe even a piece of pipe to lengthen the breaker bar for more leverage. A strong battery impact wrench may work. Those bolts get rusted and put up a good fight. PB Blaster or other good pentratung oil may be helpful.

are you just trying to change to a flare side and currently have a straight side?

i am thinking of getting a straight side bed to swap out when i need more room. the flare side definitely looks better but its very very small, smaller than any other truck bed i have ever had. its even smaller then the one on my 98 gmc sonoma that was also a single cab stepside.

I have a flare side bed on my truck currently and am looking for another flare side bed. Mine is Bowed out and is not level on the truck, so its no good and i don't think any body shop could fix it. I have to replace it. When i say bowed i mean bent from the back to the front so the whole bed is bent and won't sit level on my truck.

So from what i understand any 1998-2003 bed would fit my truck am i correct on that. Whether it be an edge,4x4,xlt etc and whether it be flare side or straight with or without molding on the top.

There are 3 bed types flare side like mine, then straight bed without plastic molding on top, then straight bed with plastic molding on top. And there all suppost to be 6 ft long.

Also does it matter if the bed comes from a regular cab truck if its flare side? Or are all flare sides the same? I know the straight bed on regular cab comes in 7ft.

I am trying to narrow down my bed search. I found a website Car-Part.com that has beds from all over the place but most do not have photos and are damaged. I have found it nearly impossible to find one that isn't damaged and even if i do i would have to have them agree to ship it to me from very far away. So my bed search isn't going well.

I really want to get a bed quickly so i can have my car painted before summer is over. I am not a mechanic so i also have to pay to have the bed installed for me.

To correct a couple minor errors:

1. '93-'11 Styleside 6' boxes are all identical from an aesthetics point of view.
1a. '08-'11 Styleside 6' boxes have additional bolt holes (8 to 10 vs 6 in the older Rangers, you may decide if you want to add holes to your older Ranger frame to add bolts, just have drain holes or weld the holes shut).
There are differences in the wiring harness between '93-'00 and '01-'11 (amber versus red turn lights)
The above ignores the minor differences in fender flares/ bed caps
You may drill the holes if your box doesn't haves them and you want flares and/or bed caps
You may weld holes closed and repaint, if the box has them and you don't want flare and/or bed caps
2. '93-'04 Splash boxes are all identical from an aesthetics point of view. All Splash boxes are 6'
Again there are difference in wiring harnesses been '93-'00 and '01-'04.
3. '02-04 Ranger STX and Mazda B2300/B2500/B3000/B4000: These boxes are also '6', but have slightly different style. They use the '93-'00 wiring harness (amber turn lights)
You would need to modify wiring harness to fit on later truck (and maybe paint the amber plastic red).

The 6' box may be found on regular cab Rangers and Mazda Bxx00 with short box and SuperCabs (Cab Plus in Mazda vernacular); the 7' box is only made in Styleside; and Ford only installed on regular cab.

Note 1: The bumper from Splash is narrower than than that of Styleside so if you care about aesthetics you want the correct one and there is a minor difference in length of fuel filler pipe. And Mazda B2200 is different all together

Note 2. The fenders from Splash unbolt from the 'box'; so if you fenders are good, all you need is a good 'box. Conversely, if you damage a fender but the 'box' is still good, all you need to do is unbolt the fender and replace with a good one.

Technically the '83-'92 Styleside boxes will bolt onto later Rangers, but there are major aesthetics differences.

Splash boxes tend to rust at the sidewall/floor joint, right at axle centerline.

Impacts tend to strip the heads of the Torx bolts. I splurged on better quality T55 socket as the lower quality ones: a. Broke; b. Twisted; c: didn't fit tight (and resulted in bolt stripping).

I use 1/2" sliding T with 3+' of 3/4" pipe along with 12" extension - the extension allows a brace so I may ensure the socket stays square in the bolt. (It goes without saying - clean all the debris out of the bolt head before attempting.

I definitely feel in over my head.
Considering all the minor and major differences I will just try to get the same bed from the same truck as mine.
