They make their money commuting insurance fraud. They charge the insurance company for new OEM parts, show the receipt, they return them and use cheap aftermarket parts.

sometimes they will return the damaged parts to the dealer and sell the OEM parts, while still using aftermarket parts.

Seems like most of the big collision places around here do it that way.

Although, not wanting to do rust repairs and only doing insurance work are two different things.

We don't deal with bodyshops much but a common sounding hustle on my parts dept Facebook groups is bodyshops like to buy oem parts for the receipts to show insurance, aftermarket/used to put on the car and then return the new. And the dealer gets stuck with a large delicate fender/hood/facia to store.

It is also a huge time suck. I spent an hour confirming part numbers (however bodyshops look up parts isn't horribly accurate and if they give me the wrong number they return it I get stuck with it) and pricing out a bunch of stuff for a car that got melty being parked next to a house fire. Never heard anything back.

My guess is you're getting dumbasses ordering parts for cars that end up totalling once the car is torn down and a "proper" estimate is written. Many shops and insurance companies want the parts there before the car comes in to cut down cycle time and rental days.

And that last part about looking up prices, that probably totalled too.

We don't push wholesale much, we are busy enough feeding our shop. Just what I see guys talking about in bigger dealers. Some chain shops sound worse than others

Yeah, he was nice enough to mention it was probably going to get totalled in his thank you email in response to my quote.

Added. Kia I will have to fight the urge of totaling.... one less Kia on the road is always a good thing.

Taycan... hm. Idk. I don't have any friends at VW. Can't hurt to try though.

I was being serious lol.

I'm not doing it because I live at work - I run a small business. Literally just hit the point where I had to hire a mechanic, but uh... he doesn't do body work.

No, I don't expect warranties.

And honeatly, that's not a horrible price.

Stuff the holes with newspaper, glue windowscreen over it, smear bondo, paint.

Guy i knew bought a "cherry" 84 F150 off ebay....he got pissed when he seen body work coming off on the way home.

Added bonus: after correcting the rusted out spots, you can also repair the upholstery!

I work with a bunch of guys that came from a local dealer. Their main parts warehouse was so big it had its own dealer code with most the manufacturers.

They also liked damage parts so they could get a refund from the OEM if they were moving fast enough. That way they didn’t get stuck with dead inventory.

I only get a couple days to MRA a damaged part. And when I do so it isn't just returned, they send another one in hopes the truck driver doesn't fold it in half too.

I think they said they had 60 or 90 days to claim damaged or defective. They have like six guys sitting in a warehouse whos job is just to keep filing out claims all day.

ouch, I've seen people get burned buying cars sight unseen off the internet way too many times to ever attempt it myself.
