Hello, trying to fix the engine shut off while driving on the freeway, decided to try and replace the ignition coil + connector since that was the last thing I messed with before it started acting up. Bought a new ignition coil, but the connector doesn't match. On the original, there are 2 red wires and 1 green wire, whereas the new one has 2 green wires and 1 red wire. Why is there a difference? When I tried to find one that matched I could only find this one. Did I get the wrong part or is there something else at play here? Interested in learning how this all works so any knowledge is appreciated.

Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.
No bigee. The connector fits and the wire colors match which is good.

You're gonna have to splice the new connector in, right?

Treat the two new Grn/Yel wires as one wire, and just splice both to the old Grn/Yel wire. Or you can go one to one, and cap off the extra new Grn/Yel wire.

Same treatment on the other wire, except the double wire will be on the other side of your splice. Treat both old Red/Blu wires as one wire, and connect them to the new Red/Blu wire. The short old Red/Blu wire goes to the radio noise suppressor capacitor through its own single pin connector; it doesn't really matter on which side of the splice this wire on, just make sure that both old Rec/Blu's are connected to the new Red/Blu.

Just make sure that your wire splices are done properly.

The 2nd Red wire is just for the AM(radio) Noise suppressor condenser, so not a bit deal it doesn't have to be hooked up
Red wire is the Key on 12volts

Second green wire can be for a tach, but other end should be taped or as said hooked with at the same place as other green wire, its the Spark signal

@RobbieD Thank you for your advice! I wired it all up and it drives the best it has in months. This weekend I'm taking a trip where I'll go on the freeway to see if it misfires while driving at all. But so far, it is looking extremely promising. It has way more power than it ever did and doesn't shut off when starting cold and shifting from park to drive. With that extra wire like @RonD said, I'll now be able to make a tach.

Thank you for posting the outcome; we all appreciate it.

I just love a happy ending; I think I'm going to cry . . .

Seriously, good job. The more that you put yours hands (and mind) on these trucks, the easier it gets to keep 'em alive.
