What ?, me worry
My 1997 Ranger with the 2.3L , 5spd has taken to doing a strange thing lately. Everything works great and it is it's usual dependable self. Coming to a stop in an intersection the idle stays up around 2200 -2500 until the rust bucket comes to a complete stop, then the idle slowly drops to 1000 to 1200. There are no error codes or anything to indicate a problem, just the idle speed is high till it is completely stopped. I took it up to 50mph, popped it into neutral and stopped and it stayed at 2200 - 2500 rpm till the truck completely stopped, then the idle slowly slowed down to 1000rpm.

Any thoughts on this ?.

Thanks

John

I had the same issue with my 98. It wasn’t a consistent thing, just on occasion. I recall unplugging the IAT sensor and the idle would come back down. Plugged it back in and she was fine for a week or month. It’s been a while but I think it was in colder weather. It quit doing it so I never investigated if further.

Mine did a similar thing, increasing rpm idle for seconds after a stop, sometimes depressing the clutch would settle it down. It was the Idle Air Control.

I remember hearing something about that relating to one of the speed sensors, I don't remember if it's the one on the rear axle or on the side of the transmission...

Well, finally got time to work on things ...... Replaced the IAC valve, no change. I guess the speed sensor in the differential will be next. Had a local shop tell me they could fix it, $ 100 per hour plus parts. Like F#*$.
