I'd like to replace the head light switch/knob inside the cabin the one on the left side of the dash just below the air vent...

The rangers are a little tight on room, I think 1990 was still using the old pull out switch? If it was, go out and disconnect the battery, and then pull the knob all the way out till it stops. Then reach under the dash (this is the hard part) and feel around the switch, the plug and wires should be on one side, the other side of the switch should be smooth except it will have a spring loaded pin sticking up. If you can get to it, press this pin in and then pull on the knob, the whole knob and shaft should come out of the switch.

Once you get a new one just put it back in till it snaps in place and then hook the battery back up.

If you can't get to the release pin, sometimes you can take a pick and pull the small metal keeper back on the knob as shown below.
