@bobbywalter mentioned something somewhere about using a Jeep Cherokee shaft too. Not sure of any details though, but maybe he can chime in
Steering wheel will be off 90* IIRC if you don't do some cutting and welding.

I snagged one out of an XJ, kinda hemmed and hawed on it and found a better one out of a second gen that only used one rag joint.

I think I recall seeing conflicting info when I was preparing that job. Didn’t know for sure until I disassembled it and counted the splines. That’s why I made a point of listing that Borgeson part number in my post.
I'm wanting to use the anti vibration variant of that same configuration u joint, which is a Borgenson #034934, and that's what i have in my cart right now.

On that note, do you feel much vibration through the steering wheel in yours?

On that note, do you feel much vibration through the steering wheel in yours?
Never noticed any before or after.

Ok RWB. This is what ended up working for the lower steering shaft I built.
92' Ford Ranger XLT with 2.9 V6.

U-Joints
steering gear input shaft end......3/4 inch - 36 spline X 3/4 inch DD
firewall end............1 inch DD X 1 inch DD
Borgeson part# 450024 telescoping steering shaft

This project was a pain in the neck!

It took me months to decide on a solution for this, in addition to determining the correct spline count.
I finally found this guy at Wild Horses 4X4 online. He had an early 1990's Ranger like me and he was confident that mine was 36 spline. He even borrowed a U-Joint from his employer and tried it on his Ranger at home to test. He was correct.

It took me an entire afternoon to cut down the telescoping shaft a little at a time to make it fit. I knew if I cut off too much, the shaft would be unusable and I would have wasted about $80.00. I also had to drill two additional holes with my drill press. I purchased both U-Joints off Amazon, because it was MUCH cheaper than the name brand. There is a guy named Jeff Grantmeyer at Borgeson who was helpful when I was working on mine.

I’m convia 3/4-36 is what I need at the box side after your input and the other resources I found.

However, I was certain the firewall side was a 3/4x1 (3/4 on the column side, 1” on the new shaft)… but with you saying yours was 1” at the column, I’m doubting that now… mines a ‘93, so obviously with the new gen in ‘93, that could be a change that was made, but I’ll probably still pick up a 1” x 1” just incase.

Wild Horses seems like a pretty good outfit, I got my twin stick shift knobs from them. They also have a pretty good youtube channel that is obviously geared towards Bronco stuff but is is entertaining.

Yeah. 1993 was a design change year for Ford Ranger. If you go the telescoping steering shaft route, you want to make sure you avoid any binding between moving parts. Some months after I finished mine, someone pointed out that the steering column shaft at the firewall, was rubbing against the U-Joint yoke. So I had to cut away a small amount of metal with my Dremel rotary tool.

Also, the telescoping steering shaft on mine consists of an inner shaft inside a hollow shaft. It is supposed to allow for some horizontal movement of the inner shaft which has a tension spring. So you also don't want any set screws restricting movement of the inner shaft.

I think I missed one of your earlier questions. I don't feel any vibration with the lower steering shaft I assembled.

the jeep....gm and ford box splines always worked and were the same for me. power steering boxes. 36 spline.


i always used jeep or aerostar stuff

it has the vibration dampner built in.

one of the guys i used to whhel with out in cali managed that place for a good period they are top tier.

I forgot to add something earlier which might be helpful. If you have trouble inserting the U-Joint on the opposite splines, don't automatically assume it's the wrong one. It just takes a small amount of debris to keep the U-Joint from sliding on. You can clean with a rifle bore brush, or file very lightly and carefully.

Update:

Finally got this done last weekend. I did end up using a 1” DD X 1”DD & a 3/4” DD x 36 spline anti-vib with the Jegs 3/4” x 1” telescoping shaft. So Paisano definitely saved the day with the 1”x1” info. Thanks everyone for the information, feels a lot better with all that slop out of the shaft!
