Since shipping is so slow took me over a month to collect this pile...

Got valve cover gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, egr tube gaskets, IAC valve gasket, throttle body gasket, oil seperator gasket, pcv valve, new o rings for the dipstick oil cap and pcv valve, fuel injector rebuild kit (orings and filter baskets), new silicone vac lines for almost everything from pcv to hvac controls and im sure some other stuff I have but am forgetting...

Duratec coming apart this weekend!

Really debating hard doing the timing cover gasket while Im at it cause thats been leaking for years... but it requires doing things Ive never done before and tools i dont own. The stupid balancer is not keyed, its held on with a diamond incrusted friction washer so once its released the cams go bang... i need the cam lock/timing kit... i think ill just let it leak since its a non harmful leak unlike the valve cover gasket that is filling the spark plug tubes with oil.

Never worked on a 2.3l Duratec, but......................

If you take off the balancer to remove timing cover and that would throw off the cam timing..............
Exactly HOW would you put the timing cover back on...AND hold cams in place to reinstall the balancer?

That don't sound right to me, I think you may need to time balancer if the crank sensor uses it, but the cranks timing gear should not be effected if you remove the balancer and timing chain cover??

I'd deal with the timing cover now. Lisle makes the tool kit, it is reasonably priced, and simple to use. The valve cover has to come off to install the cam locking tool though, so if the valve cover is off I'd be doing it then.

Remove the valve cover and lock the cams first before removing the balancer and timing cover. The cam timing/lock set is all done from the top. The balancer also holds the crank chain gear so when the balancer goes, the crank can move? so if you work backwards you can put the balancer on and chain then time the cams. On removal you need to lock everything.... im pretty drunk but im 92% sure thats how it works.

Screw it... @adsm08 explain it... its a retarded motor.

You wouldn't happen to have one of them fancy tools laying aroung right...id love to piss off my sister by doing it at her house.

Last time i looked it was a 250 dollar kit from OTC... didnt look at lisle.

all you really need is the special bolt that STOPS the crank at TDC. use a flat plate or proper sized long allen wrench to lock the cams in place.
I think it's 5.5mm, I'll have to check.
NAPA sells the special stop bolt.
you also need a 6mm bolt to run thru the balancer to set it at TDC.
lock the tensioner in the slack position.

Well if you have to have the valve cover off............can't you just lock the cams in place with Vise grips, its a feaking 4-stroke gasoline engine for goodness sake, it ain't rocket science
